This 18 page contract details the agreement between Sturges and Paramount Pictures to direct the very successful classic Western film, "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral." On the last page, Sturges signed above his typed name. The contract is also signed by producers Hal Wallis and Joseph Hazen. This contract is one of the signed copies. Autograph

Tombaugh draws the diameters of Earth and Mars to illustrate the planets' comparative sizes. Earth's diameter is 7900 miles against Mars diameter of 4215 miles. On his Mars diagram, Tombaugh draws what would seem to be his understanding of the pitted Martian surface. His observations of Mars led him to conclude that Mars had been hit by asteroids causing observable craters due to the planet's proximity to the asteroid belt. The Mariner 4 space probe affirmed his hypotheses. The astronomer best known for identifying Pluto has signed, "Clyde W . Tombaugh" in a bold hand. A fine, visually instructive illustration. The asteroid 1604 Tombaugh discovered in 1931 is named after him. He discovered 14 asteroids, beginning with 2839 Annette in 1929, mostly as a byproduct of his search for Pluto and his further searches for other celestial objects. Autograph

Anything signed by Skladanowsky is considered rare. On the lower white margin of the post card photograph, Skladanowsky has written, "A souvenir from the inventor of motion pictures, Max Skladanowsky." Skladanowsky played an important role in the invention and early development of motion picture technology. Max and his brother Emil Skladanowsky used their bioscope camera to display the first moving picture show to a paying audience on November 1, 1895. Because this occurred just before the December 28, 1895 public debut of the Lumière Brothers' technically superior Cinématographe in Paris, Skladanowsky could make the claim that he and his brother "invented" motion pictures. However, the Lumiere brothers had held a private viewing of their camera earlier in March of the same year. Skladanowsky's trade license was eventually not renewed, and the Lumiere camera won the contest for best motion picture camera of the time. The oval albumen bust length image of Gotthelf Pach is mounted to a tan board, in the center, and Pach has inscribed and signed underneath his image, "With best wishes, Sincerely, Gotthelf Pach..." The name of the person to whom Pach gave this fine image is written to the left. The photography studio's well known stamp, "Pach Bros.," is printed in the lower right corner of the tan board. In upper right corner and on verso is docketing in pencil in various hands with one notation on verso indicating the image is "possibly unique." Some residue from previous mounting on back, lower right corner shows a crack crossing the Pach Bros. insignia. Image and board are in fine condition except for unexceptional wear to the board's corners. Autograph

Textured blue and green fish appear to be swimming in blue water. The white of the fish eyes and white outlines appear to have been created by exposing the white paper stock under the paint. Condition: Bend at lower left corner of mat, chip on lower right corner. The painting measures 9.8 x 7.4 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. The iconic child star has inscribed and signed, "To June, Love, Shirley Temple." In pencil on verso, someone, possibly June herself, has written out the name of the recipient. As an adult, Temple entered politics and served as United States Ambassador to Ghana, to Czechoslovakia, and later as Chief of Protocol of the United States. Autograph

PAULA SLUITER. Enchanting Etching Signed of a fantastical bird, 8vo, 1968. The Dutch artist left a career as a nurse and teacher to study painting and etching. Her work, associated with Art Brut, is recognized for fantastical images primarily of nature. Our etching in neutral tones shows a large peacock like bird in profile standing with a small bird, perhaps its baby, in flight in the upper right corner. Signed and dated on the lower right border, "Paula Sluiter '68." The full measurement including border is 5 ¾ x 7 ½ with image measuring 4 3/8 x 6 ¼ . Overall condition is very good with slight soiling on border and mounting remnants on verso. A typed description, in Dutch, of her art by fellow Dutch artist Paul Citroen is included with the etching. Citroen was also art teacher and cofounder of the New Art Academy in Amsterdam. CARL SPRINCHORN, Original Drawing Signed, titiled, "To Emphasize Space," with text incorporated into the artwork. The drawing accomplished in artists crayon measures 11.5 x 8.5 inches and is laid onto a 16 x 20 inch cream mat. Along the left edge and bottom left, the artist has written in pencil, "1. to embrace the mental as well as the visual 2-to emphasize space 3- life size on small canvas - a problem to solve." José Corti. "Les Livres Surréalistes ainsi que les Publications Surréalistes sont toujours en vente à la Librairie José Corti". The scarce catalogue, in French, of the Surrealists  includes small (12mo)  printed bust length photographs  of each artist whose books the Corti book store sold. The 12 small photographic images are printed on six 12mo sheets, each image facing the catalog page of that artist's works listed.  Included are Maxime Alexandre, Louis Aragon, André Breton, René Char, René Crevel, Salvador Dali, Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, Benjamin Péret, Tristan Tzara, Pierre Unik, and Luis Bunuel. The back cover shows for the first time the well known list of those included among the Surrealists and those excluded. The two sets of lists printed in two columns each are titled, "Lisez: Ne Lisez Pas:" and ends, "Etc., etc., etc....." Art Nouveau pictorial boards in gilt, green and black are in very good condition as are the Art Deco pictorial end papers. Slight internal soiling, cloth spine slightly dislodged at the top, over all very good condition. The internal Deco illustrations, some of which are humorous, retain their vibrant colors. Craddock tended bar in hotels in the US and London, leaving America for London during Prohibition. In 1920 he worked at the American Bar at London's Savoy Hotel and there established his long lasting reputation as expert cocktail maker and creator. WAKSMAN, SELMAN. Typed Document SIGNED, 4 separate 4to pages, ca 1971; Two Typed Letters SIGNED , on Rutgers University stationery, each 4to, August 1, 1966, and October 1, 1971. "Selman Waksman: Discoverer of a Wonder Drug 1943," referring to his discovery of Antibiotics, is the title of the typed document containing the draft of biographical information which he generously corrected. The draft was for the book, "The Laureates: Jewish Winners of the Nobel Prize," (Tina Levitan, 1960 First edition). Here he edits the section on his biography as explained in his 1971 letter to Levitan. In the letter he notes that "made a number of important corrections and changes. He also writes, "The first announcement of the work on streptomycin was published early in 1944 in the journal Science...." He encloses a "laboratory photograph of myself...." He signs, "Selman A. In a bold hand at ninety years old, Picasso has penned his last name, date and paraph on an off white page measuring 7.5 x 10.5, "Picasso 12.1.71". He drew a line to separate his name from date and paraph. Picasso, recognized as one of the most prolific figures in twentieth-century art working throughout his long life, is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. This photograph by Christopher Cox shows Virgil Thomson was in a casual pose. It is a head-and-shoulders picture of Thomson sitting on a couch. Taken in black and white, it reveals Virgil Thomson at a ripe old age of 87 years and he looks much younger, except for his eyes which look just a bit tired! A Typed Letter Signed, to "Dear Friend," one page of browned paper with two repairs to vertical folds and three unrepaired tears, 4to, n.p. (Big Sur), n.d. Miller apologizes to his correspondent that he is no longer able to respond to mail about his books as he has no time to actually write these books any more.
