Description:
London, 1788. Engraved view with poem, 195 x 105 mm., laid down on card. Rare Cook engraving, with commemorative poem, after a drawing by Thomas Stothard (1755-1834). Stothard was elected to the Royal Academy in 1794 and often collaborated with William Blake, although the present engraving is by T. Cook. Coxhead, who wrote the standard monograph on Stothard, gives a tentative date of 1788 and describes the piece as a 'frontispiece of allegorical character, showing a bust of Captain Cook, round which are three naked cupids, and a figure, holding a scroll, pointing to a temple of fame' (A.C. Coxhead, Thomas Stothard, R.A., p. 168). Beddie knew three copies of the print, all in the Dixson collection of the State Library of New South Wales, and she gave the image the nominal title 'Philosophy inviting Youth to the heights of science: allegorical representation with bust of Cook.' A copy of the image is also known in the Nan Kivell collection at the National Library of Australia.

Description:
Uppsala: Johan Edman, 1787. Small section of the headband chipped, but very slight.. Octavo, with a folding map, woodcut vignette at top of first text page, with the advertisement leaf; in contemporary pale half calf over speckled paper boards, spine panelled in gilt, original label. The rare first Swedish version of the official account of Cook's third voyage, the first Scandinavian publication relating to Cook's final voyage including the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. The folding map is of the north Pacific and shows the newly-discovered islands at the base of the image. Although published anonymously, this Swedish compilation based on the official account of the voyage has been attributed by Rolf du Rietz to Samuel Ödmann of Uppsala (see Bibliotheca Polynesiana, 1137). The same Ödmann was editor of the Swedish editions of the First Fleet journals of Hunter and White. The map is signed at the bottom right "G.B. sc."; this is perhaps the famous cartographer Gabriel… Read more

Description:
Upsala: Johan Edman, 1783. A few pages with some wear; manuscript label faded; covers a bit bumped but a good copy.. Small octavo, with the half-title, early owner's names to preliminaries, contemporary navy-blue papered boards, manuscript label. Rare Swedish-language compilation derived from both the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World. Issued the same year as Sparrman's Swedish-language Resa, the actual editor of this volume remains unknown (the Edman edition of the third voyage in Swedish referred to the editor as an "anonyme" from Finland). The work is testament to the very real interest in Cook's voyages in Sweden, in part because of their proprietorial feelings towards the important contributions of Solander and Sparrman. Beddie knew a copy in the Mitchell Library, and a copy has more recently been acquired by the National Library of Australia, but this is an uncommon book.

Description:
Adelaide: John Stephens, 1849. Octavo, 64 pp., very good in modern brown quarter morocco. Rare printed lecture on "sanitary reform" which includes a detailed discussion of the streets and houses of Adelaide. The writer John Stephens was a South Australian identity, and regularly packed the lecture halls to deliver speeches on any manner of subjects. Never averse to controversy, this lecture is a prime example of his style, with extensive notes on the latest news from the "mother-country", interspersed with personal attacks on local landholders and builders who continue to knock up sub-standard houses: Mr. Peacock's buildings on Hindley Street are singled out, for example, Clarke's brewery is an "abominable nuisance", as is the butcher in Currie Street with his noisome piggery, and he can barely fathom the horrors of the Port Lincoln Hotel. Stephens comments in his preface that the lecture lasted some three hours, and was listened to throughout with rapt… Read more

Description:
London: Richard Bentley, 1848. Respined.. Octavo, with 7 engraved plates; a good copy in contemporary half calf. The first issue (the title-page was subsequently amended to read "H.H. The Rajah Brooke") of Low's account of Sarawak at the beginning of a century of rule by the British Raj. James Brooke, a former military officer of the East India Company, had visited the territory (now part of Malaysia) in 1839 and assisted the sultan in suppressing a revolt. He was rewarded in 1841 by being granted the position of rajah of Sarawak. Despite his endeavours to suppress head-hunting, Low's account provides detailed observations of this practice, as well as information about a number of tribes, to many of whom he represented the first point of white contact.

London: Parker, 23 January, 1836. Fine.. Quarto, pp. [25]-32, disbound. The article is reprinted from the Western Australian of January 1835. It describes the skill of two indigenous trackers - "Migo" and "Molly-Dobbin" who found a lost child after a long and frustrating search through 22 miles of dunes and thick scrub. The trackers persevere when hope is perishing, and are delighted 'beyond all conception' when the boy is finally found. This heartening account was widely reprinted at the time, including in Irwin's State and Position of Western Australia (London 1835).

Description:
London: John Murray, 1914. Two volumes, large octavo, extensively illustrated including a frontispiece in each volume, six photogravures and 18 coloured plates, many full-page black & white plates, maps, diagrams, and a panorama; a good copy in original blue ribbed cloth, top edges gilt, others uncut, spines sunned. Fifth edition of the famous official expedition account, arranged from Scott's journals which were retrieved when his tent was discovered in 1912. Scott's achievement in reaching the South Pole on January 18, 1912, is inextricably linked with the sense of heartbreak at having been beaten to the Pole by Amundsen by just thirty-four days, and the disastrous return journey in which Scott, Evans, Oates, Bowers, and Wilson all perished. Scott wrote in a letter to his wife, '...but for my own sake I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past. London: G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1823. Occasional foxing, lightly rubbed at extremities.. Tall quarto, copperplate engraved music and text;; contemporary half calf, a very handsome copy, the spine gilt and with an unusual triple "harlequin" set of labels in red, white & blue. First edition of this early collection of the patriotic ditties and rollicking shanties of the British navy: a fascinating and important record of the conditions of the Georgian sailor. Many of the songs had a lasting influence on the spirit of the navy, especially during the protracted war with France. Each is present in an engraved musical score with lyrics. The collection was authored by the prolific Charles Dibdin (1745-1815). His son Thomas, in a brief biographical notice appended to the 1850 collective edition of his father's sea-songs, remarked: 'These songs have been the solace of sailors in long voyages, in storms, in battles; and they have been quoted in mutinies to the restoration of order and… Read more
