Original blind wrappers. = A seldom-seen work on the cultivation and management of trees and forests written by the Italian agriculturist and agronomist Pietro Comparetti (1759-1835). Uncut. Uniform blue grained half linen over marbled boards. Spines with gilt titles. = A set of two volumes of works by scientists associated with the Saito Gratitude Foundation. The first volume contains five consecutively numbered monographs in the field of insect-plant interaction and, in particular, plant diseases caused by insects. The first - well-illustrated - is by Kota Monzen and titled Studies on some gall producing aphides and their galls. It includes a well-illustrated paper on fruit trees destroyed by fungi, viz. Engraved and contemporarily coloured plate, numbered and captioned. = A fine plate from possibly the first but certainly one of the most beautiful hand-coloured nidological works ever, and almost never found complete - even individual plates, such as this one, are rare. This plate, number 50, deals with the Mäasse-Geÿer, or the common buzzard, a bird of prey. The image is exceptionally large. The first author, Adam Ludwig Wirsing (1734-1798) was a versatile German engraver with a keen interest in natural history. The German medical doctor and naturalist (principally ornithologist) Friedrich Christian Günther (1726-1774) was responsible for the descriptive text. Uncut. With the widest possible margins. Slightly later grained half cloth over marbled boards. = Contains a massive list of localities in Switzerland with their actual height above sea level in meters and in feet. It includes neigbouring parts in, for instance, France and Germany, and covers in fact almost the complete Alps and Jura mountains. The introduction and general part is bilingual, German and French, the data in the tables are in German only. Label on spine foot, wo small stamps on the front free endpaper, as well as the name of a former owner; a few, isolated spots, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

London, L. Reeve, 1889. 8vo-sized (25.8 x 16.3 cm). Hand-coloured lithographed plate. Printed on one side. = A finely illustrated plate from William Curtis's famous "Botanical Magazine". The plate is numbered 7044 and shows the Burmese yellow orchid, Sarcochilus luniferus [now Chiloschista lunifera]. The illustration was drawn by Matilda Smith, engraved by E. Bates and printed by Vincent Brooks Day and Son. It was published in the Botanical Magazine volume 115 [3rd Series no. 45]. Top edge frayed and soiled, plate very lightly toned, a few creases in the lower margin and right lower corner, otherwise a very good copy.

[iv], 104, [viii] pp. Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen thesis, dealing with poisonous oil derived from the root of the plant Cicuta virosa, commonly known as cowbane or northern water hemlock. The roots look similar to carrots but are very poisonous. Written by the Dutch biochemist and teacher Allard Hendrik van Ankum (1843-after 1877). Van Ankum was the high school chemistry teacher of Dutch Nobel Prize laureate Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853-1925). Kamerlingh Onnes was an average student, but Van Ankum saw his potential. After a recommendation by Van Ankum, Kamerlingh Onnes became a student of the great German chemist and physicist Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen (1811-1899). From there he went on to become one of the most important physicists of his time. C. van Kesteren, 1838. 8vo (22.0 x 12.4 cm). xxiv, 250, [viii] pp. Later half cloth over marbled boards; Spine with gilt title. = Josef Jacob Xaver Pfijffer von Neueck (1796 or 1798-1853) was a Swiss officer who was sent by the Dutch East Asia Company (V.O.C.) to what is now Indonesia and wrote and illustrated the famous: Skizzen von der Insel Java (1829). His date of birth is uncertain. one source reports 1802, others give the dates mentioned above. According to Nijhoff, there is French edition too. Half-title and title page chipped at edges; title page with a label and stamp remnant; a few text leaves with a stamp in the lower margin; a marginal damp throughout; otherwise good. The 20th-century binding is neatly done. Rare. No other copies on the internet, no auction records. The paper deals with many newly described or poorly known Indo-Malayan butterflies and is very nicely illustrated. The Mentawai islands are off the west coast of Sumatra and were little explored. See p. 309 and 311: "Kein Teil der Erde ist mehr geeignet zum Studium der Variabilität der Schmetterlinge, als die grossartige Inselwelt des austro-malayischen Archipels. Man kann sagen, dass, soweit die Tropen im Betracht kommen, jeder Erdteil seine eigene Tendenz in der Färbung und Zeichnung der Schmetterlingsflügel hat." Uncut. In the same year, he published a similar entomological work, viz., Raupenkalender oder systematisches Verzeichniss aller Raupen, welche in Deutschland bekannt sind. Both are uncommon. Original blue ruled boards with gilt floral borders, and spine with gilt title and vignettes. = A rare illustrated guide to one of the most alluring landscape gardens in Germany. The guide deals with the "Geschichte, Gartenanlage, Topographie", etc. Each chapter with a separate half-title with woodcut vignette. The first author, Johann Michael Zeyher (1770-1843) was an accomplished botanist. Stafleu and Cowan report three other papers by him on the gardens of Schwezingen (southern Germany), but not this one, underscoring its rarity. Neither is it mentioned in the Cat. BM(NH).
