"Two approaches are possible to the problem of designing circuits which will continue to function correctly even if some of the elements of which they are composed become unserviceable. One is the use of error-correcting coding systems, and the other can be described as 'error detection with repetition.' . . . The second is of general application, whereas the first lends itself best to situations in which information is not destroyed, for example, to the storage and transmission of information" (p. [1]). Original printed wrappers, light soiling and wear, spine a bit darkened. Very good. First Edition of Kripke's second paper on "Kripke semantics." Kripke, one of the most important philosophers of the latter half of the 20th century, is best known for creating the now-standard Kripke semantics (also known as relational semantics) for modal logic, the kind of logic used to represent statements about necessity and possibility. "Kripke semantics is a formal semantics for non-classical logic systems. It was first made for modal logics, and later adapted to intuitionist logic and other non-classical systems. The discovery of Kripke semantics was a breakthrough in the making of non-classical logics, because the model theory of such logics was absent before Kripke" (Wikipedia article on Kripke). Kripke semantics play an important role in theoretical computer… Read More

Sentiment de Mr. Chirac sur les fièvres intermittentes. Manuscript document in a neat and legible hand, likely that of a scribe. 56pp. (possibly incomplete). N.p., n.d. [late 17th - early 18th century]. 247 x 194 mm., except for last 4 leaves which measure 255 x 180 mm. Unbound. Edges frayed, last 4 leaves with marginal tears and damage affecting several lines of text, some toning and spotting but very good. Contemporary manuscript notes of Chirac's unpublished lectures on intermittent fevers, most likely taken by a student attending Chirac's medical courses at the University of Montpellier. Chirac taught at Montpellier from 1687 to 1708, then relocated to Paris where he enjoyed great success, becoming physician to Philippe d'Orléans and later to Louis XV. He worked to establish an academy of medicine in Paris, one that would draw on the observations and expertise of physicians both in France and abroad, but his plan aroused the professional jealousy of the Faculté de Paris and was abandoned after… Read More

1856. Grant, Robert Edmond (1793-1874). Portrait photograph, from Maull and Polyblank's Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities (1856-60). 305 x 254 mm. Faint stain in left margin, but very good. Portrait of Scottish comparative anatomist Robert E. Grant, a student of Cuvier, Geoffroy St. Hilaire and Lamarck, and an early supporter of the concept of the transmutation of species as set forth in the writings of Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin. In the 1820s Grant began a study of sea sponges, and published several papers demonstrating that these organisms were animal rather than vegetable in nature. In these studies Grant was assisted by the young Charles Darwin, who was then living in Edinburgh. [Grant and Darwin] would often go out on long walks together at the Firth of Forth, discussing marine biology and collecting marine animals. Darwin started dissecting some of the specimens they collected, although rather poorly. Grant taught him how to make observations in nature and how to spot important… Read More
