Description:
Second edition of the main work of famous scientist Ivan Pavlov, Russian Nobel. This book is remarkable in many ways. First, we note that the new preface to this edition is marked by I.P. Pavlov "Petrograd, February 1917". That is, the book was born at a turning point in Russian history.
"Thanks to the Publishing House "Nature", this book, which has long disappeared from the book market, appears again," Pavlov writes in the new preface. - According to the decision of the Publishing House, which coincided with my own desire, this new edition of the book is a stereotypical reproduction of the 1897 edition. At one time, "Lectures" were written amid great laboratory excitement by their subject - and this put its distinct stamp on the book, giving it a special freshness and fervor. Now I have long since moved away from this subject, and my lively interest has concentrated in a completely different department of physiology; now I would not be able to write about that subject in the old tone. Thus, if I… Read More

Description:
Favorsky V. The Tale of Igor's Campaign. Engravings. 1962.
"The Tale of Igor's Campaign" is a monument of literature of Ancient Russia, telling about the unsuccessful campaign of Russian princes led by Igor Svyatoslavich Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians in 1185. The text of the "Tale", included in a manuscript collection of the XVI century, was accidentally discovered at the end of the XVIII century by A. I. Musin-Pushkin, and the first publication took place in 1800. This work has become the most important element of Russian culture, studied in all schools. A whole field of research has emerged, a whole literature around the "Tale". Many artists, starting from the 19th century, based their works on the text of this monument. Since the 1930s, two different types of monument illustration have been developing in book illustration: historical and documentary (publication of auxiliary materials) and artistic, related to the reinterpretation of the "Tale". The second type is represented primarily… Read More

Description:
Mayakovsky V.V. The Soviet Alphabet. Moscow, 1919 (facsimile edition).
In Russian literature, it is difficult to name a writer who took such an active part in the publication of his works as Mayakovsky. In many cases, he not only created the idea of the future book, but also directly embodied it, acting as a publisher, designer and printer. Therefore, the history of the publication of the poet's works is, in the true sense of the word, part of his human and creative biography. Among the books of the poet of the first years of the revolution, as well as among the pre-revolutionary ones, there is an edition published not by the publishing house, but by himself. The experience of working on the poster and the desire to make the poetic word more accessible to a new reader - Red Army soldier - prompted the poet to act as an illustrator of his own works. Moreover, in this case, the style of Mayakovsky's drawings was distinguished by the desire for novelty, the use of original pictorial solutions, and a… Read More

Description:
Edition and design of the cover by Stenbergs. Classic of book constructivism.
Stenbergs, brothers Vladimir Augustovich (1899-1982) and Georgy Augustovich (1900-1933) – Soviet artists of theater and cinema, posters and books, representatives of the Russian avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, classics of film posters.
They were born in Moscow in the family of the Swedish artist A. Stenberg, who came to Russia in 1898 for decorative work at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. They studied at the Stroganov Art and Industrial School (1912-1917) and the State Free Art Workshops (1917-1920). Already in their student years, they joined constructivism, creating industrial models and non-objective "color structures" made of glass, metal and fishing line. They actively participated in the revolutionary agitprop, decorated mass celebrations. They made an outstanding contribution to the avant-garde scenography, working for the A. Ya. Tairov's Chamber Theater.
However, they went down in history primarily as… Read More

Description:
In the 1920s, after the end of the civil war, there was an upsurge in economic and cultural life. Cultural ties with Europe and America led to the penetration of modern films, songs, pop music into Soviet Russia. One example is music in style blues, published in a attractive cover by an unknown artist. A small circulation, active use, has led to the fact that such music editions rarely get on sale.
