Description:
"He is the poet of rebellion...the greatest of all," said Albert Camus of Arthur Rimbaud. Rimbaud had staked everything on expressing God and the infinite in this poetry. When this wouldn't work, he resolved, in A Season in Hell, to leave God's love behind and to keep his personal freedom at all costs. But Rimbaud is unable to remake life, to re invent love, and pays the price. The original text appears in French with the acclaimed English translation by Paul Schmidt on facing pages. In the art of Robert Mapplethorpe, as in the poetry of Rimbaud, Man's exploration of his being leads to both darkness and divinity. Seven photogravures by Mapplethorpe illustrate the text with a shared knowledge of the passage through the dark side of the soul.
Seven photogravures by Robert Mapplethorpe.Translation and Introduction by Paul Schmidt.Edition limited to 1000 numbered copies. Each book signed by Robert Mapplethorpe and Paul Schmidt. One Volume, 7½" x 11½".

Description:
In awarding Octavio Paz the 1990 Nobel Prize for Literature, the Swedish Academy said that Paz's work "seems to incorporate, interpret, and reconstrue major existential questions-death, time, love, and reality." Paz dedicated his poem, Sight and Touch, to his dear friend, the Franco-Polish artist, Balthus. Balthus reciprocated with three illustrations for this Limited Editions Club book and prints. The poem is about light "a wavering river that sketches its doubts and turns them to certainties." Writes Paz, "Light is time thinking about itself." The poem is presented in the original Spanish, in English and in French.Three color woodcut prints by Balthus.Edition limited to 300 numbered copies. Each signed by Balthus and Octavio Paz.The three Balthus paintings have been turned into multicolor woodcuts by Keiji Shinohara and printed on Kozo Uwazen paper made by hand in Japan. Description:
The Sonnets To Orpheus by the greatest writer of poetry in German since Goethe. Rainer Maria Rilke endowed the words of his native tongue with a new and unique significance. Rilke "rarely describes a thing straightforwardly," explains a biographer. "Instead, he uses the methods of a painter…He hints at parallels in other, unrelated realms, until the object stands before us, clearly and recognizable as itself…"These fifty-five sonnets, published in 1923, three years before the poet's death, describe his relationship to every aspect of creation, and view death as a continuation not a termination of life. Our special edition offers a selection of twenty-nine of the sonnets in the original German with the superb English verse translation by Stephen Mitchell on facing pages. Balthus was encouraged by Rilke to dedicate his life to the arts. The two illustrations for this edition are a tribute to his childhood friend. Two color woodcut prints by Balthus.Edition limited to 300 numbered copies. Each signed… Read More
