Illustrated with 16 original etchings printed in colors by Erhard Amadeus Dier, each signed in pencil. 8vo. Original red morocco-backed boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine. Vienna: Artur Wolf Verlag, 1927. First Edition of this suite of prints, after the 1924 edition of the text. An arresting series of images by the Austrian artist Erhard Dier, who was a student of Camillo Sitte and Josef Jungwirth at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dier worked on designs for Austrian banknotes, tapestries, porcelain, wallpapers, and church windows. While generally known for a florid and temperate style, the present suite offers dramatic contrast, evoking some of the darker spirit found in the work of artists like Gustave Doré or Odilon Redon. Dier contributed to many issues of Die Muskete around this time, always credited as "Amadeus" and hence explaining the difficulty in tracing his full body of work. Stain on front cover; light wear at corners; 2 etchings sprung; o/w fine. Scarce.

His first royal commission was a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790, and he remained at the top of his profession until his death in 1830.Dust wrapper torn and darkened; folder of extra suite is separated at spine, cover detached; a few of the tissue guards are slightly crumbled. The engravings are in excellent condition, with no soiling or foxing. Housed in an archival black drop-front clamshell box with a color photograph on the cover, tied with wide black ribbon. Fine.

Douglas visited Richmond on the invitation of the Central Democratic Association, and spoke in the African Church, "the most capacious building of the place . . . A vast audience collected to hear him – filling to overflow the entire hall and galleries, and blocking up the doors, windows, and aisles." (Richmond Examiner). Douglas spoke in support of the Democratic candidate Franklin Pierce against the Whig, Winfield Scott, in the Presidential Campaign. Douglas argued that a professional Army officer, such as Scott, should not be president of a free Republic and noted the Whigs' nativist policies. The southern Democrats were convinced that Franklin Pierce's administration would secure the future of slavery in the territories, while Northern Democrats were relieved to nominate a candidate that did not have any radical pro- or anti-slavery principles.
