Description:
Edited by Joseph Ibn Rai. 8vo. Leather-backed red cloth. Printed by Giovanni di Gara, Venice 1607. First Edition. Text in Hebrew. The Masorah provides the number of times a particular word appears in the Bible. In his Bible commentary, the great Medieval Jewish scholar Jacob ben Asher sought to expound the significance of this phenomenon. This present work provides further studies utilizing this approach, thus reaffirming Jacob ben Asher's earlier efforts. According to many, Jacob moved to Spain with his father. It is also said that Jacob succeeded his father as the rabbi of the Jewish community of Toledo (Zacuto), while others say his brother Judah ben Asher did so. His brothers were also rabbis of different communities in Spain. He lived in abject poverty most of his life, and according to the Sephardic Community of Chios, is said to have fallen ill and died with his 10 companions on the island of Chios, in Greece, while travelling. Small repair to lower corner of title page, edges trimmed, one small… Read More

Description:
Antonius de Vercelli. Sermones quadragesimales de XII mirabilibus Christianae fidei. Illustrated with 2 multi-colored initials. The beginning of the text nicely printed in red, text in gothic type, in two columns, 51 lines to a page. 8vo. Contemporary hard vellum binding, remounted. Venetiis, Johannes et Gregorius de Gregorii de Forlivio, February 16, 1492. First Incunabula Edition. Antonius de Vercelli was, for approximately thirty years, one of the leading and most influential political counsellors of the pre-eminent families in Italy's early Renaissance: the Medici family in Florence and the Sforza family in Milan. This collection of his Sermones (Discourses) has significant importance and the added weight of someone deeply involved in the political turmoil of the late 15th century. The context and political value of these discourses helped Machiavelli define "The Art of the State." Vercelli is also a significant religious figure, having had much influence in Italian theologies. 18th century… Read More

Description:
Illustrated with 16 original etchings printed in colors by Erhard Amadeus Dier, each signed in pencil. 8vo. Original red morocco-backed boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine. Vienna: Artur Wolf Verlag, 1927. First Edition of this suite of prints, after the 1924 edition of the text. An arresting series of images by the Austrian artist Erhard Dier, who was a student of Camillo Sitte and Josef Jungwirth at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dier worked on designs for Austrian banknotes, tapestries, porcelain, wallpapers, and church windows. While generally known for a florid and temperate style, the present suite offers dramatic contrast, evoking some of the darker spirit found in the work of artists like Gustave Doré or Odilon Redon. Dier contributed to many issues of Die Muskete around this time, always credited as "Amadeus" and hence explaining the difficulty in tracing his full body of work. Stain on front cover; light wear at corners; 2 etchings sprung; o/w fine. Scarce.

Because Lincoln, Seward, and other "Black Republicans" intend the total abolition of slavery, he argues: "Is it the policy of the south to wait for that to take place, or to anticipate it by putting herself beyond the influence of their policy or the operations of their laws? . . . A year teeming with mighty events, and destined to shape the future of unborn millions, for weal or for woe. A year, whose history when written, will chronicle the convulsion and dismemberment of a great nation – the destruction of one of the fairest temples ever erected to Liberty and dedicated to Freedom – the erection of another, which Phoenix-like, sprung from a portion of its ruins, more just in its proportions, more severe in its beauty, and better adapted to secure the priceless liberties of those it has designed… Read More

Description:
Douglas visited Richmond on the invitation of the Central Democratic Association, and spoke in the African Church, "the most capacious building of the place . . . A vast audience collected to hear him – filling to overflow the entire hall and galleries, and blocking up the doors, windows, and aisles." (Richmond Examiner). Douglas spoke in support of the Democratic candidate Franklin Pierce against the Whig, Winfield Scott, in the Presidential Campaign. Douglas argued that a professional Army officer, such as Scott, should not be president of a free Republic and noted the Whigs' nativist policies. The southern Democrats were convinced that Franklin Pierce's administration would secure the future of slavery in the territories, while Northern Democrats were relieved to nominate a candidate that did not have any radical pro- or anti-slavery principles. The First African Baptist Church was founded in 1841. It's members initially included both slaves and freemen. At one point it was one of the largest… Read More

Soft cover. Fine. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Washington: Printed by J.T. & L. Towers 1854. First Edition. An important speech against the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory. Not only will the repeal of the Missouri compromise be, in my judgment, a direct violation of good faith, and in entire contravention of the avowed understanding between leading men at the South and compromise men of 1850 at the North, in pursuance of which the measures of that year in Congress were to be acquiesced in as a final settlement of the slavery question, and further agitation and discussion of this subject were to be discountenanced; but it will of necessity impair confidence, and renew agitation of a more decided and alarming character than his hitherto existed. . . And I say, further, that after all those measures had been passed, a strong desire was expressed by Mr. Clay, and other leading statesmen of both political parties, North and South, that the… Read More
