Stanford: Stanford General Books, 2006. An interesting take on the rivalry between Burton and Speke regarding the Source of the Nile; both are interesting (and difficult) historical characters. London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1967. Donleavy's third comic novel (really a novelette). Samuel S "never let religion rob him of his appetite or sense of humour" - nor should any of us. This is a Near Fine copy of the First English Edition. "Tweedy" green cloth binding with a black cloth spine; gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 125 pages. Beautifully bright in all its aspects. The only defect is an extremely faint half-rounded impression near the top of the front cover, only visible by tilting the book to catch the light. Tan decorative cloth binding with the decorations in dark brown/maroon and the titling in gilt. Clean text; xvi, 360 pages, with two pages in the front with ads for "Representative French Fiction." Introduction by the translator, J.S. Chartres; includes Flaubert's Appendix. This is an ASSOCIATION COPY. Embossed on the Title Page with chops from the private library of Joseph A. London & New York: Saxon & Co., 1886. The great French realist Gustave Flaubert's first published this historical (and considered salacious) novel in 1862; English versions were simultaneously published by Vizetelley and Saxon, with different translators (this Saxon version is less common). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, "Englished" by M. French Sheldon. ("New York" is listed as well as London for the publisher's location; Quercus believes this an indication of the First American Edition.) Bright blue cloth binding, beveled, with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xxiii, 421 pages. One publisher advert in the rear (unopened), for Welcome's "Alamo." Dublin: James Duffy and Co. Ltd., 1948. A "New Edition" of the popular novel by Charles Joseph Kickham (1828-1882), prominent Irish nationalist and convicted felon of the land. He wrote frequently for nationalist newspapers; supposedly, some 10,000 mourners attended his funeral in Dublin. Not a common title. This is a small-format edition in Very Good condition. Green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 252 pages. Text is very bright and fresh, with occasional scattered spotting. This copy would be graded much higher, at least to Near Fine, save a bit of juvenalia: a scribble on the FFEP and another on the rear paste-down. Still, a rather nice copy and a fun read today.
