Original dark brown cloth, back board about half-detached, spine creased and cracking, corner not worn. First page has a single paper defect (hole) about the size of a dime, removing about four words on page two, some small pencil marks here and there. Otherwise a complete a clean copy of a truly bizarre book. The title page states: "Not For General Purusal" An unusual title by John G. Bourke, who was captain of the U.S. Third Infantry, and much better known for his other titles, such as "On the Border with Crook" (1891) and "An Apache Campaign in the Sierra Madre: An Account of the Expedition in Pursuit of the Hostile Chiricahua Apaches in the Spring of 1883." Contents fresh and clean, leather spines have perished, board a little loose on volume 1. Brilliant anthropomorphic illustrations.

One of only 40 portfolios containing the original photogravures produced by Mapplethorpe for the Limited Editions Club edition of Rimbaud's A Season in Hell. Each photogravure numbered, initialed and dated in pencil by Mapplethorpe, all tissue-guarded. Completely fine. Black cloth folding panels inside holding a letter press sheet containing the complete set of Mapplethorpe images: eight dust-grain photogravure plates, loose. The images are all as new. A stunning set, printed in two colors -- black wiped onto the etched area and yellow rolled onto the surface as a final step in preparing the plate for printing. Mapplethorpe explores both Rimbaud's life (the gun image referring to when he was shot by Verlaine) and his own difficult relationship with Catholicism. Very rare and very beautiful.

Bound in publisher's original burlap-covered boards with white title label printed in green on upper board and spine, vivid green topstain. Book is completely fine -- tiny bookseller ticket only, looks unread. The jacket for the signed copies is the same as the regular edition but with the $3.00 price neatly trimmed off. The jacket here is very good -- clean and nice but with a single thin scratch on the spine that trims the left edge off one letter. The slipcase, with the $7.50 price, has some surface paper splits and a small ding, but no actual splits to the box -- solidly very good. All and all, a wonderfully fresh copy of the signed edition in very presentable jacket and box.
