As the Fates would have it, a Dutch journalist materialises one day who has just traversed the Sahara in a southerly direction, alone, with a motor-cycle with sidecar. Travel of the kind envisaged was quite unusual at the time, something definitely unorthodox compared to the ways of the British colonials. Hamish Hamilton, London, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Good. What have the following got in common: a crocodile journalist, Joan Collins, a judge, a thinly disguised prime minister, a less thinly disguised American president, Rambo, a collection of rampant automobiles, and a most peculiar television set? The answer is that they all appear, in the worst possible light, in Gerald Scarfe's Seven Deadly Sins. Pride, Greed, Anger, Gluttony, Sloth, Envy parade before our startled eyes. And then there is Lust ... The Seven Deadly Sins will never be quite the same again, after they have been illuminated and dissected with Gerald Scarfe's savage wit. Or will they? Faber & Faber, London, 1944. First Edition. Blue Cloth. Near Fine/Good. gilt titles spine; deckled outer edge; illustrated by b/w. photo's.; "this book is the first to be published in England, giving an account of the Swedish folk High Schools or People's Colleges. It is the outcome of the author's investigations in Sweden just before the outbreak of war. More recently, she has had the advantage of assistance from the Royal Board of Education in Stockholm and from personal friends in Sweden, in bringing the matter fully up to date by the inclusion of recent statistics. The author makes clear the relevance of the Swedish experiments to the future of adult education in England. She discusses the merits of the residential system compared with the system of evening classes, draws comparisons between the Swedish colleges and the nine institutions existing for similar purposes in England, and makes suggestions for our post-war development. From the study of the Swedish colleges,… Read More

Collins, London, 1923. First Edition. Softcover (Suede). Good Condition. From the compiler's introduction: "The ages suggested for the Scholars of this little School were ten to fourteen. These are long, long years of youth, equal to ten of the older, twenty of the aged: not only in effectiveness, but also in the sensation of time. Therefore it was not easy to choose the all-appropriate from our great and various literature. Something there might always be for fourteen to tolerate and yet for ten to hope to achieve. I have taken some poems for their happy, courageous, and honourable thought, some for the very poetry of poetry. The size of the book was, of course, limited; there would have been matter, from the stores of past and present, for fifty such books." Patterned brown end papers; Gilt titles to spine & front with blind-stamped design to front (of horses ploughing field with sky & reins in gilt.) Description:
Aquarian Press, The, Wellingborough, Northants, 1987. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. cover photo. by Howard Bartrop; For over half a century psychical researchers have tried. to explain so-called paranormal events in what they believed to be a scientific manner. The results so far have been inconclusive and confusing. The reason, Lawrence L.eShan argues in this important and timely book, is that parapsychologists have actually failed to take into account the real insights into the nature of the physical universe offered by twentieth-century science. With elegance and clarity Dr L.eShan shows that we live in a multi-tracked universe. What is impossible and 'paranormal' on one track is perfectly possible and normal on another. From this he goes on to suggest new and effective ways of understanding telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychic healing, and other psi phenomena: Above all, L.eShan eloquently defines the human focus of paranormal events, which in his view… Read More

Description:
Collins, London, 2012. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. Harnessing recent developments in computer technology, this New Naturalist volume uses the most up-to-date and accurate maps, diagrams and photographs to analyse the diverse landscapes of Scotland. Most people share an enthusiasm for beautiful and breathtaking scenery, explored variously through the physical challenge of climbing to the top of the tallest mountains or the joy of viewing the work of a painter; but while easy to admire from a distance, such landscapes are usually difficult to explain in words. Peter Friend highlights the many famous and much loved natural landscapes of Scotland, ranging from the rolling, agricultural lowlands of the east to the wild and rugged mountains of the west, from the whitewashed villages of Galloway to the traditional fishing ports of the east. He provides detailed explanations for the wide variety of natural events and processes that have caused such an exciting range of surroundings.… Read More

W W Norton & Co Inc,, New York & London, 1982. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. Introduction by Cleveland Amory; illustrated title pages; blue boards with blue cloth spine; Paul Watson is the Founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Co-Founding Director Greenpeace Foundation. Whales and seals are being hunted to extinction. Paul Watson, a young Canadian conservationist, is determined to stop that, even it costs him his life. Three times, on the ice floes off Labrador, he threw himself between baby harp seals and their killers. He sprayed the pups with harmless red dye, rendering their white pelts commercially useless. He was beaten, nearly drowned, jailed. Against Soviet and Japanese whalers, he raced his kamikaze inflatable dinghy to a blocking position between harpooner and whale. Then, with his own boat, the Sea Shepherd, supported by Cleveland Arnory's Fund for Animals, Watson rammed the pirate whaler Sierra off Portugal. The Sea Shepherd was… Read More

Description:
Jonathan Cape, London, 1936. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Fair. Travellers' Library edition; translated with introduction & notes by George Calderon. Tchekoff had that fine comedic spirit which relishes the incon¬gruity between the actual disorder of the world and the underlying order. Seeking as he did to throw our eyes outward from the individual destiny, to discover its relation to surround¬ing Life, he habitually mingled tragedy (which is Life seen close at hand) with comedy (which is Life seen from a distance). His plays are tragedies with the texture of comedies. Tchekoff wrote five important plays – Ivanof; Uncle Vanya; The Seagull; The Three Sisters; and The Cherry Orchard. The rest are one-act farces. The Seagull and The Cherry Orchard were chosen for this volume as representing him at two extremes. The Seagull is easy, entrainant, not much unlike a Western play; The Cherry Orchard is difficult, rebarbatif and very… Read More

Orient Longman Ltd, Bombay, India, 1982. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Very Good. Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, teacher, and innovator, acclaimed for her eponymous educational method that builds on the way children naturally learn. She opened the first Montessori school, the Casa dei Bambini, in Rome in 1907, and today there are more than 22,000 throughout the world. Before anything else, this book is a description of the child, seen with the exactness of a scientist and the empathy of a warm heart.
