Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1930. Octavo, 231 pages. Advertisements. Third edition, revised and with additional recipes. Halftone illustrations throughout, plus illustrations in the advertisements. The author's preface to the first edition notes that "Illustrations by means of half-tones were produced from photographs of actual dishes were first brought out, we think, by The Century Company; in this line however, both in the number and in the variety of the dishes prepared, the author may justly claim to have done more than any other has yet essayed. The illustrations on these pages were prepared extensively for this work, and the dishes and the photographs of the same were executed under our own hand and eye. That results pleasing to the eye and acceptable to the taste await those who try the confections described in this book is the sincere wish of the author. Recipes and menus appear in distinct categories, as laid out in the title: Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing-dish Dainties. Edges of text… Read More

Description:
Washington, D.C., 1956. Two sheets of White House stationery (each 23.5 x 16 cm.), though with different typographic treatments of header. The first sheet is a letter from Mary Jane McCaffree, White House Social Secretary, during the Eisenhower administration. The letter is addressed to Ferdinand Sperl, General Manager of the Hotel Pere Marquette in Illinois, who apparently informed the Eisenhowers of his hobby of collecting menus during a Presidential stay at the hotel. Interestingly, Ms. McCaffree indicates the White House does not use printed menus for guests attending meals, but she does include a sample menu for a White House formal dinner. The second leaf contains the sample menu. In a printed envelope from the Hotel Pere Marquette, with typed short description on the verso. One corner of the letter crimped, otherwise fine.

Boston: Damrell & Upham / The Old Corner Bookstore, 1894. Octavo, 179, [ii] pages. Illustrated. Later printing, originally issued in 1892. A combination treatise on nutrition, cookbook and technical manual for the Aladdin Oven, invented by our author Edward Atkinson. "Men have no right to scold their wives, or use swear words about the cook, and find fault with their meals in a constant and promiscuous way, if they only supply them with apparatus to cook with that is not fit to be used ; or which is so infernal in the heat that it generates, as to make it no wonder that those who have been of an angelic type and temper before beginning to keep house, should exhibit a capacity of another kind afterwards which may vex a patient man but ought not to cause him to complain. The way out of this dilemma is for every boy to be put in the way of learning how to make first-rate bread, and to do all kinds of plain cooking, in one lesson of one hour by a little teaching in the simple principles. An important catalogue of four hundred thirteen antiquarian science and philosophy books from New York City's legendary Scribner Book Store (Scribners - they used both names simultaneously). "Lists all books for sale at the time and describes each book with prices. Eleven sections and index of authors. Math, physics, electricity, chemistry, biology, physiology, economics, ethics, historical philosophy, technology..." The bookmen behind the catalogue - Carter, Muir and Randall (could there ever be a more high-powered threesome in books?) - saw this catalogue as part of their effort to widen the appeal of rare science and medicine books beyond the great specialized collectors of the past. John Payne's Great Catalogues by Master Booksellers, includes this and a number of other Scribners' catalogues in its survey of bookseller's catalogues of significance.
