A promotional piece for the Bailey Refrigeration Company, Inc. and presumably made in a small number. Leaves are pulling away from the rings at the wholes (not affecting the photographs, except for the cover); otherwise very good.

A marketing cookbook published as a supplement to the magazine Fujokaisha (Women's World). With five hundred recipes aimed for the homemaker, illustrated with carving illustrations (mostly fish) in the text. The rear wrapper panel has an export statement printed in English. Text block evenly age-toned. Light soiling to pictorial wrappers printed in red, green, and brown; otherwise very good. Laid in are several additional folded sheets of mimeographed and handwritten recipes. Scarce in the US. [OCLC locates one copy (LOC)].

Sonoma, CA: The Rare Wine Company, 1993. Octavo, 119 pages. Limited edition of this expanded version of the original, first issued in 1943 in an edition of 200 copies. This new printing was issued in an edition of 140. The book details the membership, cellar collections, dinners and more, of the famed Saintsbury Club. New material includes Andre Simon's 'Notes on the Wines' and A.J.A Symons description of the meetings of the Saintsbury Club with the Club des Cent, the premier French gastronomic society. In half red morocco with a gilt-labled spine. With the bookplate of a previous owner, John C Riely, to the front pastedown.

The author's preface to the first edition notes that "Illustrations by means of half-tones were produced from photographs of actual dishes were first brought out, we think, by The Century Company; in this line however, both in the number and in the variety of the dishes prepared, the author may justly claim to have done more than any other has yet essayed. FIRST EDITION. Recipes and menus appear in distinct categories, as laid out in the title: Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing-dish Dainties. In the preface, the author explains that the introduction to the third section, an some of the section's recipes, first appeared in the Boston Cooking School Magazine, though they had been written for this book. In publisher's black- and gilt-stamped blue cloth with some edge rubbing. Bookplate and ink ownership inscription of inscription of Kate M. Morrell. The bookplate is actually that of her husband, Edward Everett Morrell, with "Mrs." added in ink. [OCLC locates twenty-five copies; Bitting, page 228; Cagle 360 (later printing)].

Narrative form recipes for sauces and salads intermingled with descriptions of vegetables and other salad ingredients, and with literary or historical quotes on the subject. One in the series of single-subject "Cookery Books" published by Frederick Stokes, and other series, the most sizable. Murrey was the caterer of New York's Astor House and Philadelphia's Continental Hotel. In lightly soiled and edge-rubbed publisher's gray cloth; color illustrated paper over boards, with an illustration of a young (child) chef preparing a salad table side. With very faint early ownership signature to top of front board, and repeated at the top of page 7. Near fine, and scarce thus. [OCLC locates eight copies; Bitting, page 337; not in Cagle].

Phoenicia, NY: Woodstock Editions, 2001. Folio, 194 pages with 58 full-page color plates. FIRST EDITION, limited to 500 copies signed by Gissinger and numbered. Nearly sixty "portraits" of salamis taken by Gissinger on his travels through Milan's salumeria, with a funny and erudite series of essays by Oberlé as accompaniment. Text in French and English. In the artist's salami-pattern printed cloth; edges of text block also with salami pattern. Fine.

New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1960. Small quarto, 124 pages. Illustrated with photos by David Attie and designed by Alexey Brodovitch. FIRST EDITION. "The members of Saloon Society live in a world where there is no tomorrow, where the jugs of bourbon pour like sunshine, where the cigarette smoke is as thick as dreams, where one rockets through the heightened moments of life" (from the jacket flap). Some light wear to spine ends and, appropriately, a drink ring, to the front board, otherwise near very good. The racy dust jacket has a few chips to the spine ends as well and general edgewear.

Washington, D.C., 1956. Two sheets of White House stationery (each 23.5 x 16 cm.), though with different typographic treatments of header. The first sheet is a letter from Mary Jane McCaffree, White House Social Secretary, during the Eisenhower administration. The letter is addressed to Ferdinand Sperl, General Manager of the Hotel Pere Marquette in Illinois, who apparently informed the Eisenhowers of his hobby of collecting menus during a Presidential stay at the hotel. Interestingly, Ms. McCaffree indicates the White House does not use printed menus for guests attending meals, but she does include a sample menu for a White House formal dinner. The second leaf contains the sample menu. In a printed envelope from the Hotel Pere Marquette, with typed short description on the verso. One corner of the letter crimped, otherwise fine.

A product cookbook for this Pacific Northwest commercial bakery. Includes an introduction titled "Concerning the Earl of Sandwich" and sixty-six recipes for sandwiches and canapés (here spelled "canapis"). Some age-toning and wear to corners of illustrated wrapper. Very good. [OCLC locates two copies].

Photographically illustrated with a frontispiece of the members of the Ladies' Aid Society and with an image of the North Parish Congregational Church. Evident FIRST EDITION. The recipes are attributed and, according to the preface, come from within the Society and from other members of the Sanford community. Each section of the book is overseen by a different member, and their editing work is attributed in the Table of Contents. Thoroughly indexed, and with a section of helpful hints. The Averill Press was owned by F.B. Averill, editor of the Sanford Tribune, "The Home Paper of York County". Some age-toning to endpapers, offset mark to front and rear endpapers. In lightly worn, publisher's marbled, paper-covered boards backed in brown cloth, gilt-titled at the spine. Some rubbing to edges, near very good. FIRST US EDITION of the Hughes/Mason translation, published in the UK the same year by Elek Books. This is considered the first unexpurgated translation since Henry Vizetelly suffered fines, jail, and the demise of his publishing house for his edition of 1888. ~ Emile Zola's grand naturalist description of "the Belly of Paris", Les Halles, and the third novel in the author's epic twenty-volume series "Les Rougon-Macquart" and his first novel on the working class. But for some light age-toning to the text block, a truly fine copy, in black cloth, gilt-titled at the spine. In a fine, unclipped dust jacket.

Number 426 of 500 hand-numbered copies, issued on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the National Confectioners Association. Hundreds of chocolate moulds are depicted. With a description of the Reiche factory in German and in English. Tan paper wrappers, decorated in brown; ribbon tied. Near fine.

Stated "second edition, second printing". A promotional cookbook, advertising various Postum Company products including Grapenuts, Postum Cereal, and Minute Tapioca. Most of the content is not recipes, but rather instruction on how to achieve healthy nutrition for children in a school lunch context. Sections include "Energy Needs of the Body", "A Plan for the Day's Choice of Foods, "Lunch Brought from Home", "The Hot Lunch at School", etc. A few small, and light stains to rear wrapper panel. Otherwise fine.

Second, enlarged edition; the original was issued by Martinon in 1844. This copy is undated, but we've seen copies of the second edition dated "1852" and with the address of Chez Martinon stated as "Rue de Coq, Saint Honoré, 4." This copy the address is stated as "Rue de Grenelle-Saint Honoré". Additionally, the printer, identified as "Imprimerie de Hennuyer et Cie., rue Lemercier, 24. Batignolles" is listed here as "Typographie Hennuyer, reu de Boulevard, 7. Batignolles. Boulevard extereur de Paris. Though the book contains "de mille nouvelles recettes" it is an entertainment as much as a cookbook, with stories, advice, music, fanciful illustrations, and more. An historical survey of Scotch whisky, written at a time when the spirit was symbolizing a return to post-war normalcy and prosperity in Britain. This is the first book from Ross Wilson, an Australian whose career included research at Christ College Cambridge, a wartime stint in the R.A.F., and publicity work for the Air Ministry, the Lord Mayor of London, and the Scotch Whisky Association. He was a frequent contributor to various trade liquor publications. A few pages show creasing from a small dog ears, otherwise fine in orange-brown cloth, with a silver-stamped thistle on the front board. Dust jacket, designed by William McLaren, has a few small closed tears, otherwise very good.
