Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2010. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. d'Arbeloff, Natalie. No. 12 of 60 copies, folio size, [56] pp., signed by the artist. From the web site of The Old Stile Press: "These drawings were published almost half a century before the idea of publishing them in a book was presented, after Nicolas and Frances McDowall saw them on the artist's blog at Easter. Natalie d'Arbeloff was an art student in New York City when she first dipped a brush in Indian ink, and these drawings emerged in quick succession. A sense of freedom and excitement marked this period. Abstract expressionism was in the air and d'Arbeloff was for a while studying with Jack Tworkov, one of its leading practitioners, in his studio next door to De Kooning. Perhaps it was these painters' intense commitment to the spontaneous gesture that influenced the drawings, because Tworkov and was noted as being very proud and praised them unconditionally, even though the subject matter was not the sort of thing… Read more

Description:
San Francisco: Printed by Andrew Hoyem, 1976. Limited Edition. No binding. Near fine. Angelo, Valenti. One of 150 copies, quarto size. John Hoyer Updike (1932-2009), one of only three authors to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, is probably best known today for his "Rabbit" series. He often wrote about "everyday life", and this poem, originally published in 1958 (in "The Carpentered Hen"), touches upon the little things which make the city of San Francisco so memorable to so many. With four blue line-drawing vignettes by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books during a career which spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and The Book Club of California. He also printed books in extremely limited editions under the imprints of "The Golden Cross Press" and "The Press of Valenti Angelo". This lovely broadside was printed by the inimitable Andrew Hoyem, founder of the Arion Press and keeper of the… Read more

Description:
Glasgow: Hugh Hopkins, 1869. Second Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Two volumes (complete), octavo size, 587 pp. Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) was an interesting and, even for his day, unusual man. Described by the DNB as an "antiquarian"; at the age of 20, upon reading the "Fable of the Bees" he decided to "forswear all animal foods, and to subsist solely on milk and vegetables." By trade a "conveyancer", he studied law and became a barrister, employing his leisure time as a writer. Never one to run from an argument, in 1784 he took issue with a publication of "Select Scotish Ballads" by one John Pinkerton, claiming they were modern forgeries - which indeed turned out to be the case. Ritson went on to publish, in 1785, "The Caledonian Muse: a Chronological Selection of Scottish Poetry from the earliest times", and later, after a walking tour through Scotland, publishing in 1794 two volumes of "Scotish Song with the genuine Music". This two-volume set the second edition, published in 1869 in… Read more

Description:
London: Printed by Hague & Gill, Published by Sheed & Ward, 1932. Limited Edition. Sewn binding. Near fine. Gill, Eric. One of 500 copies, duodecimo size, 22 pp., inscribed by Eric Gill. This volume is a presentation copy with a nice association to Eric Gill's (1882-1940) sculptural work; here Gill articulates the purpose and artistry of sculpture, of function as opposed to aesthetic appeal. Inscribed on the front wrap, near the author's printed name, "To Edward Maufe, Sept. 1932, from &" ["by Eric Gill" [printed]], and signed "ECG" in green ink to the last page of text. Sir Edward Brantwood Maufe (1882-1974) was a friend, sometime collaborator, and longtime patron of Gill. A renowned architect particularly esteemed for his work on places of worship and memorials, in 1932 Maufe won a competition to design Guildford Cathedral; Gill's sculpture, "St John the Baptist" resides above the cathedral's south door. ___DESCRIPTION: Pamphlet-stitched yellow wrappers printed in red and black, with a wood… Read more

San Francisco: Arion Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Original wraps. Near fine. One of 400 copies, quarto size, 20 pp. Helen Vendler (b. 1933) is an American literary critic who has written dozens of books on Emily Dickinson, W. B. Yeats, Wallace Stevens, and Seamus Heaney. A frequent collaborator with the Arion Press, Vendler gave this lecture at the Arion Press in 2004, with the text being printed as an edition of 400 copies available to subscribers and friends of the Press. Her essay describes Irish poet Seamus Heaney's (1939-2013) work and his alternating visions of disillusionment and hope for the world, present in his life and work. Heaney, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, has been described as "the most important Irish poet since Yeats" (Robert Lowell, per Wiki); upon his death in 2013, "The Independent" spoke of him as "probably the best-known poet in the world". ___DESCRIPTION: Light grey paper wraps, stitched in white along the spine, with black lettering on the… Read more

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. First printing, octavo size, 390 pp. Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935) was a woman far ahead of her time; at a time when women were just beginning to be admitted to the halls of higher education, she not only earned a degree in classical languages in 1878 from the University of Michigan, but became the first woman to attend the American School of Classical Studies (in Athens, Greece) and, returning to the Univ. of Michigan, received a Master's Degree in 1881. Following her education she became one of the first American women college professors, teaching Latin at Purdue and Smith.Climbing, however, became her passion at the relatively (for climbers) late age of 35. Upon seeing the Matterhorn during a train trip through the Swiss Alps she vowed to return and climb it - which she would do ten years later, becoming the third woman to summit the Matterhorn and the first to do so...wearing pants (at the time, women could be arrested… Read more

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1926. Hardcover. Near fine/very good +. Duodecimo size, 327 pp. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer who wrote stories and novels that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutible universe; he often brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. "The Secret Agent" is a departure from Conrad's seafaring novels and deals with more political themes such as espionage and anarchism; this volume part of a series of Conrad's works from the publisher, the "Concord Edition".___DESCRIPTION: Full navy cloth, gilt rectangle and decoration inside gilt ruled borders with navy lettering on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, title page with orange and black ruled borders and publisher's device in orange; duodecimo size (7.5" by 5.25"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xv [xvi] [1-2] 3-311. Description:
New York: Brewer and Warren Inc, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/good. First printing, duodecimo size, 224 pp. Numerous books have been written on the art of love and relationships, but few in the realm of parody have the biting wit contained in Emily Hahn's (1905-1997) "Seductio ad Absurdum", a satirical look at how men court women; the book is formatted as instructions as to which methods of seduction pair well with which "types" of men and women, followed by a short scene in which the seduction method is played out, utilising humour to examine the social structures and gender dynamics of courtship. Hahn was an early feminist, a writer of many books and articles for "The New Yorker"; she taught English in Shanghai, China for three years and became acquainted with many prominent figures there, including the Soong sisters, influential political figures at the time and the subject of one of Hahn's books, and the poet Shao Xunmei, with whom Hahn had an affair (n. b., info from Wikipedia).… Read more

Description:
San Francisco: A. M. Robertson, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First printing, octavo size, 258 pp., presentation copy to Judge John Currey (with Jeremiah Lynch inscription), also with ANS laid in by George Bromley. Jeremiah Lynch (1849-1917) came to California as a child in 1858. During the excitement of the gold rush, when fortunes were being made and lost on a daily basis, he served as a member of the newly-created San Francisco Stock Exchange, elected president thereof in 1888. He authored several works, but this, "A Senator of the Fifties", is considered one of his most important - it tells the story of "one of the most exciting decades San Francisco and California have konwn, told with the brilliant but ill-fated David Broderick, one-time political boss and United States Senator, as the principal character" (n.b., quote from the website of SF Genealogy). Mr. Lynch was also a very active member of the Bohemian Grove, having procured the mummy of an Egyptian Princess which remains… Read more

Description:
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co, 1911. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Robinson, Charles. First U.S. trade edition as illustrated by Robinson, quarto size, [128] pp., in original dust jacket. Percy Bysshe Shelley's (1792-1822) "The Sensitive Plant" is a delicate fairy fable about ephemeral beauty and the aspiration to follow dreams when the reality of the senses fails. It was first published in 1820 in "Prometheus Unbound" along with some of Shelley's best known work; here it is re-imagined with the hazy watercolour illustrations of prolific children's book illustrator Charles Robinson (1870-1937). Though paired with Shelley long after his death, they are well matched, "his black and white illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane, and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity, greatly helped by the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography. By incorporating lettering into the page design, and in his… Read more

A scarce early bit of ephemera from the Grabhorn Press, a broadside printed for Albert Bender's "St. Patrick's Day Party"; no copies online as of this writing, OCLC records 10 copies. Albert Maurice Bender (1866-1941) was a noted San Francisco patron of the arts and bibliophile; in addition to being a prominent member of Bay Area book clubs such as the Book Club of California and the Roxburghe Club (of which he was a founding member); he also aided many well-known artists at the beginning of their careers, this being especially true of Ansel Adams, whose first published portfolio was financed by Bender. Description:
New York: Holiday House, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Gorey, Edward. First printing, oblong sixmo size, [64] pp., signed by Edward Gorey. Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative.
