Description:
Chicago: National Board Of Fire Underwriters, 1940. Wrappers. Octavo. [ii], 29 pages. Fine. Scarce World War II booklet highlighting vulnerabilities of ports, piers and wharves in the U. S. , and suggesting many improved practice requirements. The primary threat was fire--either by accident or sabotage--with the danger being greatly multiplied by the wartime congestion of vessels in the water and cargo on the piers at major ports. Prepared for the U. S. Coast Guard. Lots of interesting information. Bound in printed blue paper covers, saddle-stapled binding. Tiny tear to edge of front cover at head of spine, faint browning toward edges of covers.

A remarkably bright and clean copy. Near fine.. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian. Bright first edition of this landmark sailing narrative. Slocum was the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the earth, doing so in his gaff-rigged sloop, "Spray," between April 1895 and June 1898.

"Spray" was a wreck of a boat given to Slocum by a fellow sea captain. He rebuilt her and sailed from Boston westward around the world by way of hte Straits of Magellan and the Cape of Good Hope.

Slocum's poetic perception of the world and his graceful descriptions of his vision of reality have caused this classic to be compared…

Washington: (S.n.), 1863. Wraps. Octavo. 8 pages. Fine. Some minor creasing at top edge toward fore corner.. Frederick Law Olmsted--pioneering American landscape architect and co-designer of New York's Central Park--here gives a very interesting report in his role as General Secretary of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War.

Olmsted gives a good outline of the activities of the Sanitary Commission in connection with the Battle of Gettysburg. He first describes the logistics for the staging and distribution of supplies, and for the relief and transportation of wounded. He then lists principle articles and their quantities distributed for relief of the wounded on the battlefield in the ten days following the battle. This included some 60 tons of perishables which were delivered by refrigerated railcars and 8,500 dozens of eggs collected from farm houses in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In conclusion, Olmsted says, "The…

The important and controversial book in which Dr. Wertham claimed to have found a link between criminal behavior and the reading of comic books, though his findings were based largely on undocumented anecdotes. However, Wertham's message found an eager and uncritical audience among crusaders for public morals, leading to Wertham being called to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. [Chicago]: Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform, 1930. Single sheets. 6 1/8" x 9 1/8. Each broadside is mildly age-toned, all have creases from folding along the short dimension, two have light stains, and two have tiny chips at ends of a fold crease. Fine condition overall.. Women in the early 20th century were assumed to favor Prohibition, and indeed had been a powerful force--in the form of the Women's Christian Temperance Union--in getting it passed. By the late 1920s, however, Pauline Morton Sabin could not ignore Prohibition's very destructive (if unintended) consequences. She founded the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform in 1929 to fight for repeal, and within a year had attracted 100,000 members. The WONPR quickly became the nation's largest anti-Prohibition organization. It's goal achieved by passage of the 21st Amendment in December, 1933, the organization disbanded.

These four data and statistics…

A sermon likely in response to the February 24, 1838 pistol duel between two members of the U.S. Congress, resulting in the death of newly elected Representative Jonathan Cilley of Maine. Cilley had taken to the House floor and made allegations of bribery against a newspaper editor, who in turn dispatched Representative William Graves of Kentucky to deliver a letter of unknown content to Cilley. Cilley's refusal of the letter was interpreted by Graves as an insult upon his honor, and he challenged Cilley to a duel.
