Glasgow, Cambridge & London: Various, 1927. Alexander Todd's personal archive including school prizes from Glasgow schooldays, his Nobel Prize lecture and dozens of retained copies of his papers and speeches. Alexander R Todd (1907-1997) was awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the synthesis of nucleotides - the groundwork for Watson and Crick's elucidation of DNA. Born in Cathcart, outer Glasgow, he went to Allen Glen's School, Glasgow University before taking Ph.D.s in Germany and at Cambridge University where he was Fellow then Master of Christ's College, Cambridge, Professor of Organic Chemistry and President of the Royal Society, 1975-1980. London: Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1786. 'An undistinguished publication... but attractively printed' and attractively bound, as it happens. This set was owned for 250 years by the Little family of Newbold Pacey Hall just a few miles from Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford upon Avon. Six volumes bound in half calf with vellum tips, two morocco spine labels to each volume which give the title of every play; a mixture of green and black in colour, complementing the red upper labels. A little chipping to the leather at the head of the spines of these volumes but a very good set overall, robustly bound. Printed notes by Joseph Rann, Vicar of Holy Trinity in Coventry, a pleasingly local editor to the books' longterm owners, the Little family of Newbold Pacey Hall, about ten miles from Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford upon Avon and a similar distance to Coventry. Stratford upon Avon: The Stratford Upon Avon Chronicle & John S Leaver, 1864. Lavish broadsheet Supplement issued by the Stratford Chronicle to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth in 1564, together with a flyer for the 'Extra Performances in the Grand Pavilion' for the second week of celebrations. Single bifolium (50x38cm), old folds, a couple of spots; a very nice copy. Illustrated with steel engravings and a Perpetual Shakespearian Calendar. The final page is made up of advertisements including a couple for editions of Shakespeare as well as London-based Shakespearian celebrations. OCLC locates no copies of this Supplement - the sole bound run of the Stratford Chronicle at the BL doesn't start until two years after this event, in 1866. London: Henry Caslon, 1842. Rare book of specimen type borders and ornaments offered for sale by the most famous of all British letter founders. Large octavo bound in speckled paper covered boards with new acid-free endpapers. Title page with decorative border (with spotting) followed by Caslon's 1838 'Prices of Printing Types' with tissue guard. A single leaf of letterpress advertisement precedes the plates, a 4cm closed tear creeping in from the head of the gutter, not coming close to the text of this leaf. A large foldout plate of 'Caslon and Livermore's Specimen of Great Primer Dashes' precedes 4 plates of Rules, the last also being fold-out. 55 leaves of 'Cheques', ornaments including a leaf of Railway Carriages follow with a double page spread of 'New Flowers' with 31 further leaves including individual vignette-like 'Cast Ornaments' and concluding with a fold-out leaf of 'Inn Signs.' Full straight grain calf binding with gilt decoration to boards and three wide raised bands to the spine; faded marbling to edges of text block. Green coated endpapers; a little marking to early leaves. Collates complete in two volumes with 176 engraved plates including 4 tables and 24 engraved sectional titles, some bound out of order. Provenance: acquired from a family related to the Barings - by repute this book descended from the Barings side. One of Robert Thornton's more modest efforts in book making, his Elements is a beautifully constructed work, found here in an attractive contemporary binding. Stratford upon Avon: Mary Hornby, 1822. Souvenir of the heated dispute between Mary Hornby, recently ousted as custodian of Shakespeare's birthplace, and the subsequent occupant, Mrs Court. Printed double-sided on card (9x13cm), the printing on the verso with text upside down. The text relates to Hornby's ownership of the 'the various Articles... that originally belonged to the Immortal Bard. These HIGHLY VALUABLE RELIQUES are now shewn at a house opposite his Birthplace, where she was obliged to remove them...' followed by certificates of Jane Iliff and T. Rome: Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis, 1967. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. A presentation copy of this guide to the use of sacred music in the liturgy. Tipped onto the title page a Vatican compliments slip from 'Secretarius consillii ad exsequendam constitutionem de sacra liturgia' - the secretary of the counsel for the implementation of the constitution on the sacred Liturgy. Opposite is the bookplate of Prinknash Abbey from whose library this volume was recently deacquisitioned. The pamphlet has been systematically annotated and laid in is a further English guide to music in the liturgy from 1967. A transformation of the role of music in the liturgy was one of many change implemented in the church as a consequence of the Second Vatican Council. Very Good 1967

An anthology of poetry and prose, including 'Notices of the Canadian Indians', from contributors such as S C Hall, George Smith, Bernard Barton, Rev Robert Hall. Beautiful copperplate gift inscription "Susan and Fanny Burgess. The gift of their friend Maria Stone 1835". Laid in letter dated 1972 from Mr V C Andree of Havant, Hampshire to Mrs Mary Wilson, wife of Prime Minister Harold Wilson, "Please accept this Book of Poems as promised". Bound in embossed black leather, all edges gilt, engraved plates with tissue guards. In good condition, backstrip loose, a one inch piece is detached but present, the binding is firm, pages are clean and bright. A scarce title. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. In a fine French binding of red leather with imitation renaissance strapwork decoration to both covers and spine, all edges gilt, elaborate brown and gold end papers, engraved title page, many illustrations with tissue guards. London: Martin Secker, 1931. Hardcover. Very Good. pp 124 First edition inscribed to the writer and journalist John Brophy on the first blank: 'John Brophy from Lascelles Abercrombie 1932'. Accompanying the book is a letter from Abercrombie thanking Brophy for his recently published comments and as 'an acknowledgement of your generosity' sends 'the enclosed... I rather suspect you may not have seen it, as not very many people have. It got hardly any notice' (Brophy was at the time a senior book reviewer with the Daily Telegraph.) Abercrombie describes is as his 'magnum opus (not so very magnum tho').' The book is very good; the jacket good with a large closed tear to the lower panel. It is interesting to observe such concern about the reception of his work even from so successful an author as the former Dymock poet, Lascelles Abercrombie, at this stage of his career. [xix] pp180 A lovely copy of the eighth edition of Wilde's one act play, Salome, published along with fragments of La Sainte Courtisane and A Florentine Tragedy. The book is near fine in green boards which are faded to the top edges but otherwise very fresh with sharp corners. The edges of the pages are a little foxed, the binding is tight and the book appears to be unread. In the rare near fine dust jacket which is clean and bright apart from a few spots and one short closed tear to the head of the spine. Near Fine 1927

A collection of ten religious pamphlets with a strongly East Anglian flavour, beginning with the 1880 and 1879 editions of the Report of the Norwich Diocesan Conference bound in blue wrappers and both running to about 80 pages. John Cox's pamphlet on Scientific Neologism has a letter from the author to the Bishop of Norwich. The book is bound in brown Victorian library cloth, numbered 64 to the spine, and deaccessioned from the Alec R Vidler collection of pamphlets at Lancaster University. Very Good 1879

London: Cassell & Company Ltd, 1900. Hardcover. Near Fine. A sample volume used by publishers' reps selling the subscription edition of The Family Physician. In embossed card with gilt titles: the covers are rubbed to edges and spine, but otherwise the book is fine. Bright red embossed and gilt sample covers are pasted down to the marbled end papers: the gilt edges are bright, the pages crisp. Contains many full page illustrations, some in colour, protected by tissue guards; with photographs of famous physicians such as Sir William Jenner and Sir William Gull. The text includes the contents pages of the full twelve volumes, an introduction and sample chapters. A scarce example of an interesting volume in excellent condition. Near Fine 1900

Worn to spine and corners, the binding is tight, internally clean with dog earing to the first few pages. Contains 19 pages of advertisements for various York businesses including bell founders and carriage makers; page 133/4 is lacking. An attractive copy of an uncommon title. Good 1863

London, Turin, Paris: David Nutt; Marietti; Albanel, 1871. A copy owned and lightly annotated by the Scottish rationalist, atheist and literary critic J M Robertson. Beautifully bound in half parchment over marbled boards, Robertson's ownership signature on the first flyleaf dated 1879. Some foxing but a very good copy. Robertson has left a few pencilled notes, jotting down dates when he read the first ten sermons, so 'Jan 19 '79' (p73) and making occasional corrections to the Latin text. This was the period of J M Robertson's life when he came into contact with free thought and joined the Edinburgh Secular Society. Birmingham: W Pratt, 1870. No Binding. Very Good. (18x22cm) Broadside sheet with two titles, The Saucy Sailor Boy and Paddy's Grave. In seven verses the sailor "I am frolicsome, I am easy, good tempered too, and free" rejects the country girl who only wants him for his money. The song 'Paddy's Grave' recounts an Irishman's death in a pub brawl "Yet through the bogs this was the cry; Ireland expects you won't be shy, To die for love and whiskey". Printed by W Pratt, 82 Digbeth, Birmingham, undated. The fine paper is lightly spotted and nicked to the edges with an old horizontal crease, very good. Very Good 1870

Leeds: Unpublished Manuscript, 1961. Hardcover. Fine. ff54 A professionally compiled valuation of Mrs Bower's furniture, carpets, pictures, silver, etc, concluding with sporting guns and outdoor effects, made in March 1961 for insurance purposes. Warren Bank was finely furnished with Persian rugs, mahogany furniture and a Bechstein piano. The most expensive items in the house were two pairs of double-barrelled sporting guns by Henry Atkin and Holland and Holland. Fine, bound in dark green watered silk cloth with gilt titles, single sided typescript on unlined pages. Additional pages laid in. Fine 1961
