Lisbon, Na Offic. de Simão Thaddeo Ferreira, 1788.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound. Woodcut ornament on title page. Typographical headpiece on p. 3. Some browning and dampstains. Overall in borderline good condition. 15 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this eclogue in which Anfrizo and Umbrano mourn the death of D. José. As the eldest son of D. Maria I and D. Pedro III, D. José (b. 1761) was the heir to the throne of Portugal, and his death at a young age radically changed the course of the country over the following decades. In 1777, at age 15, D. José married his aunt, the thirty-year-old Infanta Benedita, youngest daughter of D. José I and D. Mariana Victoria of Spain. The marriage was favored by D. José I, but it was rumored that it was particularly desired by the powerful Marquês de Pombal, who perhaps hoped to establish Salic law so that the succession to the throne would have passed from D. José I directly to his grandson D. José, bypassing D. Maria - who was known to dislike… Read More

Description:
Paris, n.pr., 1663.. 2 works in 1 volume. 12°, contemporary stiff vellum (slightly soiled), smooth spine gilt, crimson leather lettering piece (with cracks and slightly defective), gilt letter, text-block edges tinted green. Foot of title page repaired below imprint. Light browning. Overall in good to very good condition. Contemporary ink note in upper blank margin of title page identifying the author. 250 pp., (7 ll.). *** Two of the most important works by Zacharie de Lisieux (1582-1660), a very successful preacher in the reign of Louis XIII who also wrote under the name Petrus Firmianus. The Gyges gallus, first published in Paris, 1659, is a description of the psychological life of the seventeenth-century French, as observed by the author (supposedly with the aid of the ring of Gyges, which made its wearer invisible). Genius saeculi, also first published in 1659, is an attack on contemporary vices, particularly the increasing inclination to examine everything independently, rather than accepting… Read More

Coimbra, F. França Amado, 1895.. First Edition. 8°, early pebbled cloth, spine gilt, original printed wrappers (chipped) bound in. Scattered light foxing. Overall in good to very good condition. (1 blank, 1 l.), 126 pp., (1 blank, 2 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION. The poet, diplomat and university professor Eugénio de Castro (Eugénio de Castro e Almeida, 1869-1944) introduced Symbolism to Portugal; as a young diplomat in Paris he came into contact with the great French symbolist poets, becoming a friend of Jean Moréas and Henri de Régnier. His influence can be seen even on such established Portuguese writers as Guerra Junqueiro, and he undoubtedly paved the way for Camilo Pessanha and Mário Sá Carneiro. Castro's verse ("often so perfect, always so artificial," says Bell, Portuguese Literature p. 337) signaled the return to poetry of careful thought and planning, as opposed to the inspired improvisation of the Romanticists, and led to the cult of "art for art's sake" or "estheticism" that became… Read More

Paris, Na Livraria Nacional e Estrangeira [Imprimerie de J. MacCarthy appears on verso of the half title], 1825.. First Edition in Portuguese. 12°, contemporary tree sheep (only the slightest wear), flat spine gilt, marbled endleaves, text block edges tinted yellow and sprinkled red, green silk ribbon place marker. The original Latin texts and the Portuguese translations appear on facing pages. There is also a Lisbon edition of 1850. Gonçalves Rodrigues (3855), citing the Velloso auction catalogue (576), refers to an edition in 8º of Paris 1823, but we have found no other references to such an edition, and suppose it must be a ghost, perhaps based on a typographical error. Gonçalves Rodrigues (3868), citing Ameal (2090), also refers to a Paris 1824 edition in 12º; again, we have been able to find no other… Read More

Description:
Lisbon, Lith. de Portugal, 1902.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Oblong 8°, original illustrated wrappers (very light toning and minor chipping), stapled. Illustrated throughout with line drawings. Overall in very good condition. (6 ll.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Clever caricatures of paintings exhibited in the Lisbon Salon of 1902: a fascinating prequel to the series Catalogo comico da Exposição de Belas-Artes, which Valença and Carlos Simões published from 1914-1919 and 1923-1924. Valença was only 20 years old at the time, and had begun his career barely 2 years earlier, as director of O Chinelo with Simões and André Brun. The final page includes heads of 9 "Visitantes e expositores." The brief captions are not attributed to an author. Francisco Valença (1882–1962) was perhaps the most important twentieth-century Portuguese caricaturist. The article on him in the Grande enciclopédia portuguesa e brasileira notes that Valença was renowned in Portugal and abroad, comparing him to Bordalo… Read More

Early manuscript foliation in ink. Manuscript flourish under Portales' printed name. (2 ll., the second a table). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Lisbon, Assírio & Alvim, 1996.. Large 8°, original printed wrappers. As new. 349 pp., (1 l. advertisement). *** Santo Agostinho was originally published by Livraria Civilização in 1945. The present is an important critical edition. Teixeira de Pascoaes (Amarante, 1877-Gatão, 1952), poet and writer, was the principle representative of Saudosismo. Along with António Sérgio and Raul Proença, he was one of the leaders of the movement "Renascença Portuguesa". In 1910, with Leonardo Coimbra and Jaime Cortesão, he founded the review Águia, principle organ of the movement. Toward the end of his life he was befriended by Eugénio de Andrade and Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos. Cesariny, who edited and republished some of his texts, considered Pascoaes a superior poet to Fernando Pessoa. *** On Teixeira de Pasoaes, see Fernando Guimarães in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 363-4; Mário Garcia in Biblos III, 1423-30; and Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, III, 194-7.
