Healdsburg, CA: [Zephyrus Image], nd. 8 1/2 x 16 1/8" broadside, linocut on salmon newsprint. Another beautiful example of the jobwork the press did for their local library. The poster features a striking linocut by Myers, which depicts a book tangled in several plastic six-pack rings. Given the limited scope of distribution, decidedly uncommon. [Johnston p. 234]. Overall creasing, with several marginal chips and closed tears. Good only.

Description:
Paris: Gallimard, 1932. First edition thus. 8vo, 285 pp, photographically illustrated wraps. Translated from the American by M. Lemierre. First French edition, this copy marked as a press copy (S.P., or Service de Presse). The first French edition of Jack Black's masterpiece, a proto-beat novel and massive influence on underground literature ever since. The design of the French edition is far more suitable to the "beat" feel of the novel than the U.S. edition, eaturing an unnatributed sepia photograph of a man in a prison cell on the cover. The back cover features a photograph of a blown safe. 1 1/2" closed tear at foot of front panel at spine, some light creasing and darkening to the spine, short creases to tips, but otherwise a relatively clean and well-preserved very good example of a fragile book.

Description:
Zurich: Jean-Christophe Verlag, 1937. First edition. 8vo, 223 pp, bound in dove grey cloth printed in blue; illustrated dust jacket. The first German translation of a work which had originally appeared in Dutch two years prior. The poet and socialist Roland-Holst was a close friend of Luxemburg. Following the ascent of the Nazi party, it was almost impossible to publish books with a socialist or pacifist attitude in Germany, and many such German language books were published in Switzerland, as with this title. Jean-Christophe Verlag was a publishing house closely allied with the Buchergilde Gutenberg, famous for publishing B. Traven. This shift allowed the Swiss designer Richard Paul Lohse to work on a variety of socialist books, including this title, which features one of the most striking and enduring dust jackets of the 1930's. The front is graced with a photograph of Luxemburg; the rear panel reproduces a letter from Luxemburg to the author. The two panels are linked by a photomontage of… Read More

Description:
New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1935. First edition. 4to, single sheet folded twice. Published in an edition of 350 copies, this example marked H.C. Morley, author of the Haunted Bookshop, was inspired to write the Rubaiyat one day while visiting Frances Steloff at the Gotham Book Mart, when he witnessed her going through letters from creditors at the shop. He took some of the bills home and wrote the poem, which he had letterpress printed by Lew Nye. The proceeds from the broadside went to Frances to help her pay the bills. "Awake! Depression with its long long blight Has blown by business higher than a kite And lo, the First Day of the Month has caught Me bending, and this letter I indite Oh Bibliophile, if thou canst not aspire To pay this overdue account entire Then break it into little bits, and send At least some portion, for my need is dire.
