Red buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) wrote a number of biographies and bibliographies of American malacological authors in the series, Occasional Papers on Mollusks, published by the Museum of Comparative Zoology, in Cambridge, MA. As a basis for these papers, he accumulated the published works of these malacologists in one or more bound, chronologically arranged, convolutes. Original uniform printed wrappers. = This is the first English and improved edition of Haeckel's Die Ordnungen der Radiolarien, being a "translation of a recent paper of mine, by Miss Nellie Maclagan, ...revised by myself", and published in two subsequent issues of Nature (volume 29, numbers 742 and 743). It forms the first comprehensive systematics of the higher taxa of the Radiolaria, mostly based upon Haeckel's findings when studying the Radiolaria collected by the Challenger Expedition, and beautifully illustrated by Haeckel in his famous Report on the Radiolaria. Weak, vertical fold (as usual, due to the postal delivery method), otherwise very good, clean and unmarked. Rarely found in original issues.

Uniform red cloth with title in black; uniform printeddust-jackets. = We assume this set to be complete. Volumes 4 and 5 are rather common, the others are rare. Ex library copies with small stamps on dust-jacket, front free endpaper rectos, half-titles and titles. Labels on spines. Some abrasion to first volume cloth. Internally however, clean, being little used, if used at all.

Leningrad, NAUKA, 1978. 8vo (23.8 x 17.1 cm). 256 pp.; 15 text figures; 155 (groups of) figures on 33 unnumbered plates. Printed boards. = A detailed and well-illustrated work on the littoral marine gastropods of the USSR by the Russian malacologists Aleksandr Nikolaevich Golikov (1931-2010) and Oleg Grigorevich Kusakin [also spelled Kussakin] (1930-2001). A few new species are included. Published in the series, Fauna USSR (now Fauna Russia), as number 116. A very good, clean copy. One of the few recent work on Mollusca from this region, and rarely seen.

Oblong, elongate leporello with 23 folds (16.1 x 590.4 cm), with stiff printed boards(16.1 x 24.6 cm). = A nearly six-meter-long, harmonica-folded publication, with a signed dedication, in ink, by the author and artist, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), to "Wim". Wim is Wim Arent Louis Beeren (1928-2000), former director of the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, and the Stedelijk Museum (municipal museum) in Amsterdam, a leading museum in the avant-garde world ever since its foundation in the late 19th century. As director of the Stedelijk Museum, Beeren was responsible for several important exhibitions, e.g. of Kasimir Malevich, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, and Sigmar Polke. He bought works by Haring and Koons for the museum well before they became world-famous. Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle had an exhibition in the Stedelijk in 1962. Publisher's dark blue blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt vignette (a mayfly) on the front board. Yellow endpapers. = The pseudonym "Clericus" suggests that the author belonged to the clergy. He is generally believed to be the reverend William Cartwright. A nicely illustrated work with a large appendix which includes, for instance, a "Life of flies from March to September". This part with a few pencilled marginalia. Small private library label of Alan John Jarvis on the front pastedown. Some rubbing to the board and sopine edges, a bit cocked, some scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition. No wrappers. = Very rare paper on Spanish flowering plants, including several species described by the author, the Spanish entomologist and botanist Mariano de la Paz Graëlls y de la Aguera (1809-1898). The illustrations are very good. Published in the academy's Memorias, volume IV. Uncut. A very good clean copy.

Paris, Georges Chamerot, 1884. Folio (40.6 x 26.0 cm). Title page, 111 pp., 55 plates in chromolithography. Printed wrappers. = This is a detailed and well-illustrated work, apparently meant to be a prospectus, on the mineralogical groundwater of the Caucasus. The plates show the geology, the waterworks, and the spa buildings, or buildings to be, of the region. Victor Edmond Léon Dru (1837-1904) was a French engineer and entrepreneur, who initiated artesian wells in Paris, Algeria and Russia. This work contains a thorough analysis of, apparently, existing and future projects in Russia. Uncut. Spine split, the spine cover a bit chipped. The plates are beautiful and clean. A very good copy. Very uncommon, especially with the original printed wrappers. Not in any major bibliography.

Disbound. = Interesting account of the eruption at the Greek island, Santorini (Thira) in 1928. "The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep. It may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Re-publisher's blue cloth with gilt title on the spine. = This work is nicely illustrated with text engravings and contains a surprizing number of new genera and species, including some from West Africa. Gilt on spine a bit abraded, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Leiden, Ministerie van Koloniën (J. Boeke), 1919. 4to. xxxiv, 351 pp.; 69 text figures (mainly fine engravings, a few photos). Original printed wrappers. = Three papers based on the collection made by J. Boeke. The major work, with its own index, and an addendum, is the "Report on the fishes" J. Metzelaar. This work is nicely illustrated with text engravings and contains a surprizing number of new genera and species, including some from West Africa. It is preceded by a general introduction of the marine fauna of Curaçao, and a list of over 300 fishes collected around the island, with, when present, their names in Dutch and/or Papiamento (the local language). The paper by Rathbun on stalk-eyed crustaceans, also has some new species. The last paper, by Richardson, is merely a check list. With a preface by J. Boeke. Text is in English, except for the first 34 pp. Ex library copy with small stamp cancelled on title page and little mark on cover. Otherwise a very good, complete copy.

Spine with red morocco label with gilt title and gilt stippled lines. = Written by the French geologist Gabriel Auguste Daubrée (1814-1896) and dealing, e.g., with meteorites. With a handwritten dedication by the author to the French mineralogist and petrologist, Auguste Michel-Lévy, (1844-1911), one of the pioneers of microscopic geology and petrology. Two old library stamps on the front wrapper, one on the last text leaf, otherwise very good, clean. Ward and Carozzi, 604.

Original printed boards. = The plates show fossils, mainly corals (described by G. F. Dollfus), and Triassic Radiolaria (by G. J. Hinde). A good clean, and well-bound copy, however lacking, as usual, the portfolio with maps and profiles.

Later grey cloth with original printed front wrapper mounted. = Detailed report on this destructive, wood-boring marine isopod with excellent description and illustrations of the animal on five large plates. Originally published as the academy's Verhandelingen, 2(1)6. Title page a bit spotted, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. Not in Nissen.

Presentation copy with gilt title and initials on the front board. Gilt floral endpapers, gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Original pictorial wrappers bound in. = In this large and well-illustrated work, the desired profiles and characteristics of domestic dog breeds are described, explained and - above all - beautifully illustrated. Many illustrations are page-sized. In 1897 a French edition was published. Both editions are very rare. The author's name is variously spelled Bylandt and Bijlandt - the former seems to be the preferred spelling. Henri Adriën Graaf van Bylandt (1860-1943) was one of the founders and first chairman of the Dutch cynological society. This is clearly a luxuriously bound presentation copy for "Jhr. Mr. J. W. D. S. Seldom seen outside the U.S. Some light wear to the boards; small annotation on front free endpaper rectos; otherwise, a very good, clean set.

Contemporary paper-covered boards, blind label on spine. = With clear and bright illustrations of caterpillars. Uncut. As usual some light browning in the text, and the fore edge of some plates. Small stamp in the lower margin of the title page, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. Horn-Schenkling, 19719.

Spine with four raised bands; compartments with blind-tooled floral vignettes and red morocco label with title. Floral patterned pastedowns. Red edges. = A detailed catalogue of caterpillars (and butterflies) and when to find them, arranged by month. Written by Johann Mader (b. 1745). The preface is by Kleemann. A very rare work, which is seen as a supplement to Rösel van Rosenhof's famous Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung, as well as to the works by Kleemann himself, and that of Schwarz (both principally dealing with the adult stage of Lepidoptera). Third(?) edition. First published in 1777. One more edition appeared, in 1791. All are rare, but for this one very little records could be found. Number written on title and spine foot, in an old hand; some wear to the spine, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Horn-Schenkling, 14398.

Paris, Aubert, [1845?]. 4to. Lithographed title page showing a lion, 24 lithographed plates with about 190 figures, captioned in two languages. Somewhat later blind quarter cloth over marbled boards. = In this little known bilingual work by the French traveller, illustrator and naturalist Felix Achille Saint Aulaire (1801-1889), the mammals - with usually about five to nine species on each plate - are grouped into orders much in the fashion of diverse Buffon editions. The illustrations, however, seem to be original. The first plate shows several human races. It also includes 14 pp. of publications by this rather unknown publisher: Aubert et Cie, Place de la Bourse in Paris. No work later than Le keepsake des Dames pour 1846 is mentioned here, and together with the fact that the chimpanzee and gorilla are not included we assume this work to be from the early 1840's - 1845 at the latest.
