Cincinnati, (OH): P. Clarke, Sculpt., 1840. Engraved trade card, 4 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches, employing several styles and sizes of type, including italic. We have been unable to trace any information concerning the Caldow enterprise. Rather uniformly browned, but a nice example, with a deep impression, of an early western American trade card. (#5010).

Raceville, Washington County, NY: Issued by C.W. Race & Co.; Sandy Hill, NY: Herald Steam Printing House, 1881. Black lettered green paper wraps, some chipping to spine. Vignette of a pair of American Indians in front of a teepee, on the front wrapper. 18 cm. 48 pp. Some light soiling to wrappers, else very good. A promotional for Race's Indian Blood Renovator, composed of a "combination of simple roots, barks and herbs" derived from a formula obtained from an Indian Medicine Man of the St. Regis tribe of Indians. Numerous testimonials, the latest dated 1881. No listings found on OCLC.

Topeka, Kansas: Commonwealth" State Printing House, 1872. First edition of the first biennial issue of this directory (published into the late 1880s). 8vo. 225 pp. [Title page on p. 21, preceded by ads.] Numerous ads, including two chromolithographs (both for printers). Original boards printed with advertisements, rebacked in leather, not affecting the printed ads. Very good copy with old library markings, marked withdrawn.

Chicago, (IL): Laird & Lee, Publishers, 1905. First edition. 8vo. 110, (2, ad leaf) pp. Profusely illustrated, nearly every page, with many stereotypical drawings of African-Americans, "a joyous jumble of jokes," verse, skits, anecdotes, dialect tales, etc. Uncle Nic is described on the title page as the author of "Camp Stories" and "Coonahtown Comedy," but we have been unable to locate either as a separate publication. OCLC locates one copy (San Francisco Public). Poor quality paper browned; still a good solid copy of a scarce book of humor. Original color illustrated wrappers (rubbed, some light wear at the extremities). (#6111).

Disbound. 34 cm. 3 pp. Illustration below title shows three open railroad cars, an early engine and engineer, and a fireman, with a vignette of an eagle overhead. A few pencil notes on the piano score, scattered foxing, shallow chip to right margin not affecting text. American Imprints 34106. Thomson Checklist 227A. Very good.

Drawing in pen and black ink, 7 1/8 x 9 7/8 inches on white drawing paper, the drawing 5 ¾ x 7 inches; in the pen and ink drawing (page 213), Crusoe stands holding two rifles, below him, kneeling and bent over as in submission, a native man, soon to be named Friday, holding Crusoe's foot upon the back of his head, with a text quotation typed below, "This, it seems, was in token of swearing to be my slave forever." Matted and labeled for display. Unsigned but with annotations about size reduction and placement; upper margin with mounting tape and some tape residue stains. Very good. Roger Duvoisin (1900 - 1980) was born in Switzerland, studied in Paris, and arrived in America with his artist wife in 1927. Used on the trade edition dust jacket and front board of many library bindings, the gouache drawing shows Robinson Crusoe walking near a bay, carrying his rifle, umbrella, and parrot, accompanied by two cats, a dog and a goat (nearly the same image is reproduced on page 128 with ink details added). Matted and labeled for display. Unsigned but with annotations about size reduction and placement; upper margin with mounting tape and some tape residue stains. Very good. Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1946. Drawing in pen, black ink, and white gouache. 8 ½ x 11 ¾ inches on drawing paper 9 x 13 ¼ inches. The drawing, not signed, does have the penciled annotations, "1/2 Reduction" and "p. 162"; the verso bears only a few numbers. Showing the nose and a window of the Nautilus as it drifts through water thick with fish large and small; it is on page 171 of the published book (not p. 162), and in text describing seas north west of Australia. Matted and labeled for display. Upper margin a little darkened by the mounting hinge. Kurt Wiese (1886-1974), was born in Germany and wanted to be an artist early on, but pushed to the export trade, work took him to China, then World War I forced him to Australia as a prisoner and there he began drawing again. After release he went to Brazil, all places that fed his skill and imagination with narratives and images. A "Map of the Highways in Amherst and Vicinity" and other in text illustrations. Original photograph of a street in Amherst, "photographed in January by E.E. Hubbard," laid down on stiff card stock, and tipped in as a frontis. Some separation at gutter where photo tipped in, previous owner's pencil inscription on front flyleaf.
