Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo, 4 volumes. All four volumes are first printings. A crisp, clean, very handsome set, bound in contemporary 3/4 navy crushed morocco and navy cloth, with patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, and gilt spine compartments with thematic devices. Occasional scattered foxing on just a few leaves, very slight rubbing to edges, and the spines perhaps a tinge sun-faded, but the gilt bright and strong. Overall a very near fine example. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Freeman on a tipped-in leaf of Japan vellum preceding the half-title page in volume I: "Inscribed for For Julian R. Norris -- Douglas Southall Freeman." A distinctly handsome set in this unique leather binding. Freeman won the 1935 Pulitzer Prize for this definitive biography of Lee.

[no place given], 1900. Very good +. Reasonably large photograph, measuring about 7.75" x 6", tipped onto a mount with a 2-inch border. Mount is unevenly dust-soiled and has one large corner chip. The photograph is well-preserved; very good or better. The image depicts an office scene, possibly inside a train station or other large building. A woman sits at a typewriter, while four men either consult papers or converse with each other. A bright light has flooded the room and made the two hanging posters on the wall difficult to read, though one of them clearly is a map of the Union-Pacific Overland Route. A nice image.

Description:
[St. Albans, VT?]: [Chandler - photographer], 1900. Near fine. One photograph, whose image margins measure about 8" x 6.25" (weighted border measures 1-1.5" around). Print in excellent condition, though has not been examined out of frame. Housed in a contemporary wooden frame, which shows minimal wear, commensurate with age. The image a single locomotive train engine and a single railcar crossing a wooden bridge, likely in the area of St. Albans, Vermont (which is the named location of the photographer). The University of Vermont Special Collections library houses a collection of photographs from one W. D. Chandler of St. Albans, a professional photographer active in the first decade of the 20th century, which is certainly this photographer. The train is too distant for us to be able to identify any markings. Regardless, an attractively presented image of a train in rural Vermont.

Description:
[Ohio?]: [not published], 1900. Very good. One photograph, probably an albumen print or similar, measuring about 6.75" x 4.5", tipped onto a mount with a >1" border. Housed in a near-contemporary silver-plate frame. Has not been examined out of frame. Photograph has some very tiny indentations, even dust-soiling, but otherwise appears clean; overall, very good. The image depicts 16 workers involved in various duties working for the railroad or the rail yard there are a few well dressed businessmen, as well as some overalls-laden laborers. We are unable to detect any markings on the locomotive, and thus cannot say exactly where or when it was taken, but based on the general appearance, and the fact that the photograph emerged from a collection of mostly Ohio photography, we would posit that this photo was taken somewhere in Ohio around 1900.

Description:
[Thomaston, GA]: [Trice - photographer], 1920. Very good +. One photograph, measuring about 9.5" x 7.5", housed in a contemporary mat and somewhat later frame. The photograph is in excellent condition, though it has come slightly loosened from the mat. We have not endeavored to open the back of the frame to either fix or examine it. In the center of the image is a large passenger railcar, with the locomotive in the background (if any identifying markings are present, we cannot read them). Posing in front is a group of nearly two dozen businessmen in suits, all posing next to a sign reading "Goodrich Silvertowns," which were a popular white wall tire during the 1910s and 1920s, which would seem to date this photograph. The photograph is credited on the bottom right corner to Trice Studio in Thomaston, GA, which is likely the general area in which the photograph was taken. Though slightly mysterious a nicely-sized photograph of a train taken in the rural south.

New York: J. Seymour, 1832. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Small octavo, 396pp., illustrated, plus advertisements. A nice, clean example in the publisher's printed boards with brown morocco spine. Some scuffing to edges, shallow insect damage at the frontispiece (not affecting the image), and the hinges a bit weak, but still intact. A solid, clean, original copy, with a few contemporary ownership markings, overall very good or better. Text and illustrations particularly clean, including the famed train plate, inserted at pp. 158-9. Description:
1937. Hardcover. Very good. One diary/journal, about 4.5" x 7.25", bound in 3.4 red cloth and tartan-patterned cloth. Many leaves blank, but there are 26 leaves which have attributed and clearly-written poems, quotations, and other snippets that the diarist wanted to keep. A bit shaken, but rather clean overall - very good. There are also a dozen or so news clippings, handwritten notes, and other items, including what is perhaps the most interesting item in the whole lot: one leaf, about 5.5" x 9", with double-sided text, being a handwritten "Prayer for our Boys" [Under "Boys" is the crossed out word, "Children," suggesting that the author realized she had wanted to address boys and men rather than the whole of humanity]. Most notable is a hope that boys would "hate whiskey and vice of every kind," and "respect womankind." It's a feminist prayer of its time. The text of the prayer: "Dear Lord - Thou knowest we consecrated…

[Washington, Ohio?]: [Self-published?], 1828. First Edition. Sewn binding. Good +. Octavo, pp. 293-340 [48pp.]. A good or better copy in the original sewn wrappers. Moderately foxed, with some older dust-soiling, curling to the edges of the page block (which extends beyond the wrappers by 1/2 inch or so). Contermporary ownership signature of James Dremin [?] on the front wrap. The editor, Samuel Findley, was a Presbyterian minister of the Associate Reformed Church (an offshoot of the Presbyterian Church, via the Synod of the South). The rear wrap lists agents for the journal in various locations, many of which are in the American south, which comports with the history of this Presbyterian denomination, which was formed in South Carolina near the end of the 18th century. An exceedingly scarce volume of Ohioana, as we found no library holdings for this or any other issues of "The Religious Examiner," though old auction records mention scant holdings in Ohio institutions, which may be long…

Chillicothe, O[hio]: Thomas Carruthers, 1826. First Edition (?). Softcover. Very good -. 16mo., 28pp. About very good in the publisher's blue printed wraps. Front wrap partly detached at the spine, but holding. A few negligible chips to the wraps. Moderate, but not disfiguring, foxing throughout. A curious volume, perhaps aimed at a juvenile audience. We found no other copies in the market or in OCLC, though one record with nearly the exact same title and publisher appears as part of another volume, at 36pp. We are unable to determine whether these are the same items, or if one precedes the other. In any event, a scarce volume of Episcopal history in early America, likely published within the first three decades of Ohio's statehood.

Description:
[Western US]: [not published], 1955. Near fine. Group of 75 snapshots, measuring 3.5" x 3.5", including 1/4-inch white border (rough cut). The snapshots are all numbered and labeled in contemporary blue ink on the verso, and as such we can note that they are numbered 1-77, and numbers 17 and 18 are missing. Prints show some curling, but no significant creasing or damage; generally near fine. The photographs are snapshots of a very typical middle-class American road trip out west. Based on the cars in several shots, which are uniformly late 1940s and early 1950s models, this trip was probably taken around 1955 or slightly thereafter at the latest. There are hardly any people in any of the shots, but one photo depicts two young white men posing in front of a sign for the "Mount Evans Crest House" in the Arapaho National Forest. These are likely the two gents who set out on this adventure and took these photographs. A number of snapshots capture typical vistas, including Old Faithful, Mount Rushmore,…

Description:
London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co, 1873. First Edition. 12mo, 60pp., illustrated with one small and three very large folding plates, followed by advertisements. A very interesting nautical volume, laser-focused on the subject of ships' cables, beginning with their use in ancient and more recent history, along with some charts and tables indicating various strengths and towing capacities. At rear are advertisements in Chinese, Japanese, and Persian, for Peacock and Buchanan's Ship Cables (no doubt included herein to boast of the firm's worldwide influence), and then followed by a series of testimonials, printed on vibrant yellow paper. Book overall near fine in the publisher's blue flexible boards. Significant foxing to one leaf (where the folding plates are inserted), else a fresh, very nice example. Folding plates printed on thin tissue are in excellent condition, with just a few very short and inevitable stress tears. Handsome modern bookplate to the front paste-down, and owner's name to the front…

Description:
East Aurora, NY: Roycrofters, 1902. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo, 44pp., illustrated. A fine, fresh, lovely copy in the publisher's ¾ light brown morocco and marbled boards, with marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, silk ribbon, gilt spine, and raised bands. In a contemporary plain straight-grained yellow cloth dust jacket and green cloth slipcase. It's unclear whether these were executed by Roycroft or were done slightly later by someone else. But in any event, they have very nicely preserved the book. This is number 16 of 100 limited copies printed on Japan Vellum and "illumined" [that-is, hand-illuminated] by one of the workers at the Roycroft Shop. In this case, the artist was Elsie Whitney, who has signed her name on the limitation page, where of course Elbert Hubbard signed his name, as well. A positively charming Roycroft volume, much more refined than their more pedestrian publications. An uncommon book, genuinely scarce in this condition.

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Octavo, 4 volumes. A complete set of Updike's crowning achievement, the Rabbit Angstrom series of novels. All four volumes are SIGNED by Updike, though "Rabbit, Run" is signed on a laid-in bookplate. "Rabbit, Run" has a few minor stains to the top edge and very mild edge-fading, but the dust jacket is nicer than usually found, with just a hint of creasing at the crown, and only the slightest fading to the spine; much less than usual, and scarce thus. That volume and "Rabbit Redux" are price-clipped. All three of the other volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. A very handsome signed set, which makes a stately centerpiece for any Updike or more general modern literature collection.
