Description:
Musée Royal de Mariemont, 2008. 4to, original printed card covers. 155, (3) pages; illustrated. Fine. Chalon is best known today for his role in the Fortsas hoax in 1840, which involved an obscure auction sale consisting exclusively of "unique" works unknown in the standard bibliographies, which had been dreamed up by Chalon to appeal to particular book collectors of the day—all of whom managed to learn about the sale and many of whom fell for it. His numismatic works focus mostly on medieval issues of the Low Counties, a subject on which he published hundreds of articles. His few book-length works are generally quite rare though still cited.

Moderately trimmed; title page spotted; very good. An attractive copy of the first and only edition. Quite scarce. Lowndes's Report was a major contribution to the controversy surrounding the recoinage under William III, the principal protagonists being Lowndes, then Secretary to the Treasury, and John Locke. In this work, Lowndes reviews the expedients of former reigns, urges a recoinage, and suggests a change in the standard by raising the nominal value of all coins by 25%. Dekesel L135. Goldsmith 3131. Hirsch 78. Kress 1908. Lipsius 235. Manville 52 (quoting William Nicolson's English Historical Library as follows: "Mr. Lowndes has written in so peculiar &…
