Race Prejudice and Discrimination. Edited by Arnold M. Rose. Borzoi Books: New York, 1951. First edition. Measures 6 x 8.5 inches. 597 pages. Original gray cloth boards with bold yellow jacket. The book is an anthology of contemporary scholarship on the problem of racism and an early example of critical race theory. The collection includes the essay by W.E.B Dubois, "Three Centuries of Discrimination Against the Negro." This anthology thoroughly defines the problem of racism in America, examining it through the lens of the oppressed, not the oppressor. Many of its essays use minority experiences and perspectives to thoroughly disseminate the problem, advancing broader cultural understanding in the years leading up to the civil rights movement. Light stains to jacket do not affect text. Textblock tight and clean. Overall very good condition.

Autograph letter signed and written by Ralph Waldo Emerson on September 10, 1873 in Gosnold, Massachusetts. 2 pages on 1 bifold sheet. 6 x 4 in. A frequently visited location to Emerson, he writes to a woman named Sylvia Watson on the largest of the Elizabeth Islands in southeastern Massachusetts, Naushon Island. This letter is exceptionally cordial and pleasant, as Miss. Watson is about to join Emerson's extended family. As a result, he mailed this letter just a few days shy of Sylvia Watson and his architect cousin, William Ralph Emerson's, wedding that took place on September 15, 1873. Emerson opens the letter warmly, writing "My Dear Miss Sylvia,". He continues his kind sentiments by writing, "Your three friends in our house, Mrs. E. and myself, & Ellen, desired to send a token to you on the auspicious Monday, but could agree on none but this 'Bella Donna,' which we dare hope is a favorite of… Read More

Eulogy for Ralph Waldo Emerson. Written by C. A. Bartol. "Ralph Waldo Emerson: A Discourse in West Church". Boston: A. Williams & Co., 1882. Octavo. Original blue printed wrappers. 20 pages. "How shall I present Ralph Waldo Emerson...?" "What, as his main characteristic, this man stood for was unity in men and things." Ralph Waldo Emerson died on April 27, 1882. This eulogy was originally read in West Church, Boston by Cyrus Augustus Bartol, a "fifty years acquaintance" of Emerson (as quoted from this text) and a noted transcendentalist known as the "Poet in the Pulpit." This memorial, spanning a full 20 pages is both extensively biographical and an impressionistic portrait of Emerson, both from his personal inner circle and the general public who saw him as the embodiment of the spirit of their age. After his death, Emerson was interred in the Sleepy Hollow cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts. "The affections in us are more curious than our thoughts, and feel farther than our minds can peer." Description:
EMERSON, Ralph Waldo. His first published essay. The Christian Disciple And Theological Review. Boston: Wells and Lilly 1822. New Series. Volume IV, No. 1-6. Six issues bound in full leather. The Christian Disciple was one of the most prominent religious periodicals of the 19th century and it gave 19-year old Ralph Waldo Emerson the opportunity to appear in print for the very first time. Emerson's "Thoughts on the Religion of the Middle Ages" was published in the periodical's November-December 1822 issue and was signed with a pseudonym made from the last initial of his first, middle and last name, "H. O. N. " This carefully thought and evocative essay touches on an early cornerstone of Emerson's scholarship, which would continue to fascinate him throughout his long and industrious career. That is, the relationship and duties of contemporary people to the past. Envisioning America as a locale with very little past but much possible for the future, contrasted with Europe, steeped in history, Emerson… Read More

Ireland, Alexander. "In Memoriam. Ralph Waldo Emerson: Recollections of His Visits to England in 1833, 1847-8, 1872-3, and extracts from unpublished letters" Published in London by Simpkin, Marshall, & Co., in 1882. An important series of somewhat overawed reminisces and recollections from one of Emerson's lifelong friends. The book was based in part on a piece Ireland wrote for the Manchester Examiner on April 29, 1882, the day after news of Emerson's death reached England. It was later reissued, with many additions, as "Ralph Waldo Emerson: His Life, Genius, and Writings". Alexander Ireland [1810-1894] was a Scottish newspaper publisher, author and bibliophile who became acquainted with the Sage of Concord during Emerson's first visit to England in 1832. It was during that visit that Emerson also met William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas Carlyle and other literary notables. Ireland persuaded Emerson to return to England in 1847 for a lecture tour which he arranged. Ireland is also… Read More

This scarce set includes two original 1993 and 1996 Japanese B5 chirashi measuring 7" x 10", and 5" x 7". Pink Narcissus is an American experimental art house drama between two gay men that came out in 1971 where queer topics were just being uncovered in Hollywood. Because of it's vibrant artful direction, it was long rumoured to have been directed by Andy Warhol before discovering the filmmaker as James Bigood. Bigood's photographic and cinematic work was so celebrated for it's artful taste that the art book publication, Taschen, released a book with his full body of work in 1999. These two advertisements were meant as "chirashi" which is Japanese for "flyer" and were handed out as advertisements in movie theaters. Illustrated on both sides, the front of the larger piece shows original vibrant illustrations for the Japanese screening… Read More
