The book was published lithographically at the Baynard Press in London, during a period of ink and paper rationing. The resultant illustrations are very striking. Jack Townend studied at the Slade School of Art under the direction of Randolph Schwabe. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1946. Jack Townend has recently had the recognition he deserves with the The 'V and A museum' recently reprinting many of his titles.
