The tan, paper covers of this booklet are in good minus condition; there are several creases and spots on them; the cover edges are worn and frayed. The front and back covers are partially detached. The only writing detected on the interior pages of the booklet is the number "5" on the title page. The pages are moderately foxed throughout, especially around the page edges. The page areas with text contain much less foxing or discoloration; the text is clearly readable. The booklet is protected in a clear, removable plastic sleeve with backing board.

Government Printing Office. Washington, D.C. 1870. 702 pages. Hardcover. The dark brown covers are in good minus condition. They are worn, soiled and contain numerous small spots, especially on the spine and front cover. There is moderate bumping/rolling on top and bottom of spine and corners. The title and year are in gold on spine and quite readable. The spine is rolled and the binding is loose when the book is opened, but the binding is intact. The interior of this book is in good minus condition. The pages are mildly to moderately toned with light foxing. The end papers are more heavily foxed and the front free endpaper is missing. There is no writing detected in the book. The book includes 45 black/white plates. These plates include fruits such as apples and raspberries, steam plows and other equipment, geological maps, and a frontis that is an early engraving of Cornell University, which would grow into a leading agricultural university in the U.S. The plates are generally in good condition.

There is some fraying along edges. Moderate bumping/rolling on top and bottom of spine and corners. The title is on a paper label on the spine. The covers/spine are still vibrant in color. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is in good condition. The pages are clean, there is toning, there is no writing, some pages have faint foxing. The book includes 81 full-page plates, several are fold-out; one of the fold out plates is torn in half (both pieces present). Two of the plates are in color, the others are black/white and mostly photographs of geological formations, mining operations, and fossils. A small card, "Compliments of G. H. Perkins, State Geologist", included.
