Fine, completely fresh, in a custom cloth protective box showing trivial shelfwear. Enclosed receipt from Bayntun shows a charge of 1750 pounds for the binding. This binding is currently featured on Bayntun's website showcase, as illustrative of their best work. A great copy.

The exact extent of Whitman's involvement in this book is debated but he may have authored the important final two chapters on the developmental theory of English ("Through speech man realizes and incarnates himself...") and on language in America. The sage colored binding has faded to mottled tan, as usual. Cloth is unusually free of soiling. The gilt on the title is hard to read because the cloth nearly matches the gilt. Book is tight and clean, a few small nicks to the cloth, wear on the yapped edges, two corners just starting to show the boards, but still a tight and very clean copy free of all markings. The back blank page has an inch square torn off one corner, not affecting anything. Contents very fresh, no markings at all. Nice book.

Printed letterpress in Bembo on Lana, a French mouldmade paper, bound in 1/4 goatskin with Fabriano paper boards. Really a lovely production. The leaf in this copy is important -- it is from the preliminary "to the reader" prologue, in which the publisher bemoans the publication of bible in English and explains the present book as essentially a necessary evil. The author explains that, back in the good old days of St. Jerome's Vulgate, "the scholar taught not his master, the sheep controlled not the pastor," and so on. A significant leaf regarding the history of the translation of the Catholic bible into English. Hamel and Silver, Disbound and Dispersed 192.
