The legend of Joaquin Murietta is a lengthy and circuitous tale of many facts mired in little contemporary documentation. Rollin Ridge first told the story in The Life and Times of Joaquin Murieta in 1854 and the outlaw was reportedly captured by Harry Love and his head displayed in a Stockton museum. Rosita is, on one hand, one of the earliest contemporary books to be written on the notorious bandit and (as one Cataloger surmised) the earliest poem to be printed in San Jose, CA.
