FIRST EDITION of this translation. 12mo, 182 x 110 mms., pp. [ii], iv, 230, including half-title, contemporary straight grain olive morocco, gilt spine, all edges gilt; text a bit foxed, top of spine chipped, but a very good copy with the ownership "Miss Hawkins" in a fine calligraphic script at the top of the half-title. It would be pleasant to think that this once belonged to Laetitia-Matilda Hawkins (1759 - 1835), the author and daughter of Sir John Hawkins (d. 1789), whom the author of Rasselas declared to be "unclubbable." A goodish copy. "Jessop noted that the catalogue of the Surgeon-Geneeral's Library, Washington, attributes the translation to D. R. Bouiller. The translator suppressed Berkelery title, Siris, etc., explaining in his preface that he thought it misleading and too obscure for the generality of his readers. He stated that he used as the source of his text the 'third edition', that is presumably, the second Dublin edition; he had also profited by manuscript corrections and additions, which the author had supplied" (Keynes). Jessop 184. Keynes 73. The translation was reviewed in Acta Eruditorum (Leipzig, 1746).

After a few pages of recollections on the state and status of novels, the reviewer asserts, "We are therefore inclined to think that novels, descriptive of the manners of the day, if imbued with a sufficiency of talent to enable them to live, will be more acceptable to our successors than equally well-written novels of the historical class. FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATION. 8vo, pp. [viii], 518 [519 - 520 errata], 6 engraved plates, uncut, original wrappers, contemporary paper label on spine; edges and top and base of spine slightly worn, spine worn over cords, but generally a good copy. Malling's book, a compendium for children of "les traits memorables de patriotisme & de vertu, qu'offre l'histoire de ces royames" (to quote the Preface) in Danish history, was first published in Danish in 1783. In the preface, the publisher notes that the translator died in 1786. OCLC locates copies in Yale, Boston Athaneum, Göttingen, Linkoping, National Library of Sweden.

A contemporary hand identifies Baker as the author on the title-page. Baker's very popular work gave succour and comfort to those who found the new discoveries and innovations in science and philosophy, mostly notable those of Locke and Newton, likely to displace the role of faith in religion. Baker essentially argues that empirical reasoning and knowledge can never produce the certainty found in revelation.

FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 177 x 103 mms., pp. [iv], 135 [136 blank], including half-title, fine colour frontispiece, original boards, uncut, paper label on spine, which is slightly defective, front joint cracked, but a good copy It seems unlikely that an author named "Ferdinand Farquhar" ever existed, as I have not traced any other works by him. No surprises there.

This is probably the fourth "edition" of this work, though the pagination and registration is the same as that of the 1725 printing. The work was first published in a "few copies" in 1722 and reprinted in 1724. Benjamin Franklin is generally agreed to have been compositor on the 1725 printing, but it is unlikely that he worked on this 1726 printing.
