Augustus Post of the Aero Club of America approached hotelier Raymond Orteig to sponsor the prize, which he did. The prize was to be awarded to any aviator who completed a non-stop flight between New York and Paris, in either direction, within 5 years of the announcement of the prize in May, 1919. <br /> <br /> When 5 years passed without a serious attempt, Orteig renewed the prize for another 5 years. Original printed salmon-colored wraps over sewn binding, with minor edge rubs, a diagonal crease to lower fore corner of front cover, and short separations of covers at spine ends. Some foxing to first and last leaves.. Frustrated by Rhode Island's outdated landed property ownership requirement for voting, and by the inability to change the system legislatively, Thomas Dorr and his supporters essentially tried to set up a separate state government and capture the arsenal at Providence. These efforts were thwarted by Governor Samuel Ward King and the Charter government. Dorr was arrested and tried for treason. This is a record of the trial testimony and verdict. Despite his setbacks, Dorr's efforts resulted in Rhode Island's adoption of a new constitution in 1842 which removed the property restriction and otherwise greatly liberalized voting requirements in the state.

Jacket is price-clipped, has light soiling, chipping along top and bottom edges of spine and along top edge of rear panel, with the top corner of rear flap clipped away.. Maps and plans, some folding. Winston Churchill's detailed military history of the operations directed by Lord Kitchener on the Upper Nile between April 1896 and November 1899. Churchill was a participant in the decisive battle of Omdurman, and wrote this account while still a young cavalry officer. Originally published in 1899 in two volumes. This new edition has a new Introduction by Churchill. This Scribner's edition is surprisingly uncommon, with only 1,040 copies printed.
