Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934-1935. American historian, biographer and author Douglas Southall Freeman is best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington, for which he was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes. Published in four volumes between 1934 and 1945, R. E. Lee: A Biography was met with high praise. The New York Times declared it "Lee complete for all time." Historian Dumas Malone wrote, "Great as my personal expectations were, the realization far surpassed them." The book also established the Virginia School of Civil War scholarship, an approach to writing Civil War history that concentrated on the Eastern Theater of the war, focused the narrative on generals over the common soldier, centered the analysis on military campaigns over social and political events, and treated his Confederate subjects with sympathy.

The books have also created a Kodachrome-sharp picture of American life . . . from the somnolent 50s . . . into the uncertainties of the 80s" (The New York Times). Description:
London: Simon & Schuster, 1988. In this profound and insightful autobiography, Douglas paints a searing and unforgettable picture of an almost Dickensian childhood of brutal poverty - the background that has dominated his life as an actor, father and man, fueling the great creative anger that has added such depth in his performances. With moving insight, he shows how the determination to overcome that childhood and succeed on his own led him to take roles that most stars of his magnitude would never have risked - Van Gogh, in Lust for Life; Spartacus the slave; the courageous, conscience-stricken Colonel Dax in Paths of Glory; and the agonized boxer Midge, in Champion, to name a few. "Authentic, revealing, unselfconscious... his performance here is a star turn" (Publishers Weekly).

Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some chips and tears. Translated by Edith Bone. Although not marked in anyway, this is from the library of John and Elaine Steinbeck. She fled the German attack on Warsaw in September 1939 and took up residence in Soviet-occupied Lviv and eventually in the Soviet Union. She was the founder of the Union of Polish Patriots there and played an important role in the creation of the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kosciuszko Infantry Division. The division developed into the Polish People's Army and fought on the Eastern Front during World War II. Wasilewska was a trusted consultant to Joseph Stalin and her… Read more

From the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest with his bookplate to the pastedown. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, name to the front free endpaper. A very sharp example with noted provenance. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters is written with a dazzling, almost showy, technical brilliance.
