Description:
Paris: Unesco, 1968. Softcover. Near fine. Fifth impression. 47 pp. Light toning and a few small scuff marks on wrappers, else fine. As cited in WorldCat: "This work presents a challenge not only to mid-20th-century zoological theories of racial difference, but more radically to the very idea of human progress that underlies racism. Lévi-Strauss's goal was to assert that cultures are in fact not equal, but unique, and that these differences must not be read as inferiority, as if a culture has yet to arrive at some crucial developmental stage of mass production and consumption. Rather than products of history, cultures are accidents--and therefore incommensurable. From Lévi-Strauss's perspective, the UNESCO rhetoric that all cultures are equal, while well-intentioned, only invites comparisons that could bolster racist ideas about biological inferiority and cultural backwardness. (Adapted from Carolyn M. Rouse, "Claude Lévi-Strauss's Contribution to the Race Question: Race and History.")

Louisville, KY: John P. Morton, 1910. Softcover. Very Good. 144 pp, with maps, illustrations, in original wrappers Front wrap starting to separate at spine ends (but still firmly attached); contents clean. Revised, with material not contained in earlier editions. A prefatory section titled "Announcement" noted that the original purpose of this publication was to desribe for the nation's youth how steam engineering evolved and "what advantages have been given to them by the makers and owners of railways," but that the present purpose is "to bring about a better understanding between labor and capital--to demonstrate that the very vastness of our territory suggests the necessity of aggregations of capital--corporations; that without these it would be improssible to have so great a country, so enlightened a people."

Jerome had heard these stories many times before, but this time was different: this time there was a tape recorder going. That weekend was the first session of what was to become a remarkable oral history of one of the biggest and most important ranchos in California history, a quarter-million acre ranch with tens of thousands of cattle and hundreds of horses, not to mention vaqueros, Chinese cooks, and a vast extended family of remarkable people. But Rancho Santa Margarita Remembered is not just a history of a Southern California cattle ranch. More important, it is the recorded memory of a… Read More

Description:
New York: Summit Books, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First printing. 379 pp, indexed and illustrated. Fine copy in fine dust jacket protected by a new mylar cover. A well written and engaging study of raven behavior in the woods of Maine. Publisher's description: "Why do ravens, generally understood to be solitary creatures, share food between each other during winter? On the surface, there didn't appear to be any biological or evolutionary imperative behind the raven's willingness to share. The more Bernd Heinrich observed their habits, the more odd the bird's behavior became. What started as mere curiosity turned into an impassioned research project, and Ravens In Winter, the first research of its kind, explores the fascinating biological puzzle of the raven's rather unconventional social habits.

Description:
Real photo postcard showing the interior of a Western railroad depot with considerable character and detail. Very mild crease to one corner, a touch of wear to the edges; near fine. Although someone has written "Texas RR" on the back, and there are signs posted relating to the Denver & Rio Grande and to the Fort Worth and Denver Railway, we suspect this station was actually in southern Colorado, given that there is a print of Sheridan's Ride on the wall (a Union general on a Texas wall seems unlikely at this time). Among the objects visible in the photo are an elkhorn chair, footstool and table; at least eight taxidermy specimens (elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, buffalo calf, eagle, owl); photographs and prints; and a railroad map, ticket agent's sign, and rack of timetables.

Austin: Book Club of Texas, 1995. Hardcover. Fine. 109 pp, bound in original gray cloth with paper spine label. Fine copy. One of 300 issued. Publisher's description: "When brothers William and John Wright arrived in the United States from Ireland in 1850 and could find no other suitable employment, they joined the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Rifles, which served on the Texas frontier. Their description of their experiences is unusual on several counts: it is a view of Texas in the 1850s, when personal accounts were rare, and it is written from the point of view of visitors to this nation. And because the Wrights published their book in 1857, only three years after they left the army, their story has an immediacy lacking in many memoirs.

Hillman, who was President of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, visited Russian in 1921, where he visited clothing factories and met with Lenin and other Soviet leaders to discuss issues relating to the economic reconstruction of the country. Here he proposes formation of a cooperative commercial venture between an organization of American shareholders and various Soviet state manufacturing trusts. The Americans would contribute capital in the form of money and machinery as well as production know-how; the Russians would contribute already existing workshops in need of capital infusion, a ready labor force, and access to local markets.
