Hayez, 1899. 8vo (24.7 x 16.1 cm). 8 pp. (including printed front wrapper). = Rare paper (offprint), by the Viennese mathematician Leopold Bernhard Gegenbauer (1849-1903) whose name and fame is substantiated by, e.g. the Gegenbauer functions, Gegenbauer transforms, Gegenbauer series, Fourier-Gegenbauer sums, Gauss-Gegenbauer quadrature, Gegenbauer's integral inequalities, Gegenbauer's partial differential operators, the Gegenbauer equation, Gegenbauer approximation, Gegenbauer weight functions, the Gegenbauer oscillator, and the Gegenbauer addition theorem published in 1875. In this work Gegenbauer expanded some functions first described by the German astronomer and mathematician Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784-1846). A stamp on the front wrapper gives the publisher' s name and publication date (2 December). Front (wrapper) page somewhat soiled, an with a blue pencil annotation, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare.

Large 4to (33.5 x 25.1 cm). 133 [74; 59] pp. Original, uniform printed wrappers. = Two important papers on closed sets of orthogonal polynomials by the Russian mathematician Vladimir Andreevich Steklov [here: Wladimir Stekloff] (1864-1928). "Steklov was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. In 1887, he graduated from the Kharkov University, where he was a student of Aleksandr Lyapunov. In 1889-1906 he worked at the Department of Mechanics of this University. He became a full professor in 1896. During 1893-1905 he also taught theoretical mechanics in the Kharkov Technological Institute (now known as Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute). In 1906 he started working at Petersburg University. Original printed wrappers. = Translation by the Tertiary palaeontologist Théodore Lefèvre (the same as the Paris publisher?) of an unpublished manuscript by one of the foremost British paleontological taxonomists, Thomas Davidson (1817-1885), best known for his many contributions to the Palaeontographical Society Monographs. Wrappers detached, gatherings loose, but text and plates clean. Provenance: Inscribed and signed by Lefèvre on the front wrapper to the malacologist and palaeontologist G[ustave Frédérick] Dollfus. Rare.
