San Benito, in Cameron County, was originally named Diaz, but was re-named for a local rancher, Benjamin Hicks in 1904. It was incorporated in 1911. The St Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad reached the town in 1904 and contributed to developing irrigated farming. Here the brochure shows the first bale of cotton produced June 11, 1911, the "earliest bale ever ginned in the United States."
