Description:
Basle: M. Furter, 1505. 19th-century cloth-backed stiff gray wrappers, manuscript title and bookplate on the front wrapper. First Edition of the Augustinian's only work: a quadripartite interpretation of the fixed liturgical elements of the Mass: the Ordinary and the Canon. Bechoffen analyzes the texts of and historical commentaries on the Introit, Gloria, Creed, pre-Eucharistic prayers and prefaces, the Canon and various post-Mass collects. The page layout is striking. The text of the liturgy appears in a large textura gothic font, which is keyed to Bechoffen's analysis printed in a small rounded gothic.      Throughout, Bechoffen considers the rites literally (the factual), allegorically (the symbolic), tropologically (the moral) and anagogically (the spiritual).
