[Washington DC]: [Brady and Company], 1861. Albumen photograph [16 cm x 21 cm] / [6.5" x 8.5"] Unmounted. George Norman Barnard (1819 - 1902) was an American photographer best known for his views of the Civil War,where he was the official army photographer for the Military Division of the Mississippi, commanded by Union general William T. Sherman, which sometimes involved photographing and documenting fortifications and bridges. James F. Gibson (1828-1905) was a Scottish born photographer who was among the more prolific yet obscure Civil War photographers. Gibson may have emigrated to America with Alexander Gardner, who was also from Scotland. Gibson's first documented trip into the field was when he accompanied George N. Barnard to the Bull Run battlefield in March 1862.
