Description:
1658 Alexander the Great Quintus Curtius Rufus Greece ROME Elzevier RARE

"Nothing can be lasting when reason does not rule."
― Quintus Curtius Rufus, Histories of Alexander the Great
This famous and important work by Quintus Curtius was inspired by the celebrated Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great and was written, more than likely, during the reign of Caligula in Rome. The style of Quintus Curtius's writing was directly in line with Livy, whose work on the people of Rome greatly influenced the writing of "Histories of Alexander the Great." Curtius describes the strange and mysterious things that Alexander the Great encounters on his military expedition and does so with great historical acumen. This book, along with Livy and Tacitus, should always be considered part of the canon of ancient world texts.
This rare 1658 printing was published by Elzevier in Lyon which included the notes of Matthaus Rader, Nicolaas Blanckaert, and Johann Freinsheim.

1675 Tertullian Prescriptions Against Heretics Early Church Father Pagan Heresy

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."
― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.

One of Tertullian's most important polemical works was 'De Praescriptionibus adversus Haereticos', or 'Prescriptions Against Heretics'. In this book, Tertullian describes why heresies exist, and even must exist, while showing through scripture that… Read More

Horace's works have yielded some famous quotes that have influenced cultures and societies including "Carpe Diem!" (seize the day) and "Pactum serva" (keep the faith).
'The Art of Poetry' was a poem written by Horace in which he offers advice on writing poetry and has been known to influence authors for centuries. Horace discussed the use of appropriate vocabulary, use of prose, and warns against using 'deus ex machina' practices.

Horace's works have yielded some famous quotes that have influenced cultures and societies including "Carpe Diem!" (seize the day) and "Pactum serva" (keep the faith).

This late 16th-century Bonelli edition of the works of Horace was edited with contributions from numerous authors including Poliziano, Aldo Manutius, Francesco Robortello, Nicolai Perotti, Marco Sabellico, and many others. Claude Paradin was a 16th-century French heraldic and emblematic writer most known for his illustrated historical works. His most influential work was 'Devises Heroiques', an illustrated version of the Old Testament. Each episode is illustrated by a woodcut and is paired with a short French poem which mirrors similar emblem publications on the Bible that were published in Paris and Lyon in the 16th-century. This particular 1583 edition contains 247 engravings from Bernard Salomon, which is 16 more than previous editions (the book of Numbers has 11 new, and Joshua has 5).
