Description:
London: printed [by T. Bensley] for Kearsley,, 1794. First Wakefield edition, "a very elegant and correct edition" (Dibdin) of Horace's works in the original Latin, here a particularly striking copy. The editor Gilbert Wakefield (1756-1801), Unitarian controversialist, was "one of the two leading British scholars of his time, the other being Richard Porson" (ODNB). Wakefield taught at Hackney College, a dissenting academy where William Hazlitt was briefly a student, and later edited a number of classical and theological texts, including Horace, Lucretius, and Virgil. With the booklabel to the front doublures of literary journalist and author Charles Whibley (1859-1930), on whose recommendation T. S. Eliot was appointed literary editor and a member of the board of directors of Faber and Gwyer. 2 volumes, octavo (203 x 127 mm). Description:
A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype., 1755.. John Stow's, A Survey of London, was first published in 1598, with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work, it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital, which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis, the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype (1643-1737), the ecclesiastical historian and biographer, published a new, hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very good condition. Size: 38 x 34 cm. (15 x 13½ inches)

Description:
Beijing: Lifan bu,, 1910. Qianlong's uncompromising pursuit of perfection over popularization Second imperially sanctioned edition, first printing, of this quadrilingual work conceived by the Qianlong emperor, China's Louis XIV, to standardize transliterations between Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, and Manchu. This edition was published by the court's Office of Territorial Affairs after the layout of the 1750 first edition. Both are now rare: we have traced complete copies of the present version at Columbia and SOAS only, as well as one with a variant title page printed in red at Princeton. The harmonization of disparate languages was at the centre of the Qing dynasty's system of political control and its promotion of cultural influences from India and Mongolia. "Using tables and glosses, the book systematically gave Chinese equivalents to letter combinations found in Tibetan and Sanskrit... Since Chinese characters, as single syllables, could not precisely represent the consonant clusters found in… Read More

Description:
Qingdao: Qingdao ribao she,, 1957. First edition, sole printing, of this hard to find Mao-era tourist guide to the resort city of Qingdao, demonstrating that leisure travel and commercial advertising, including for the city's famous Tsingtao Beer, remained alive and well under Communism. Of the 10,000 copies originally printed, few have survived: WorldCat finds two and none are traceable in commerce. Qingdao emerged as a popular tourist destination in the late Qing and Republican periods when the city was administered as a German and then a Japanese colony. Its beautiful beaches, strong transport links, vibrant shopping scene, and nearby attractions continued to appeal to urban travellers during the 1950s and 1960s. The present guide, of a much higher production quality than most contemporary publications, was compiled by staff from the newspaper Qingdao ribao (The Qingdao Daily). It includes sections on architecture, museums, recreational sports, parks, and places of interest such as the beautiful… Read More

Shanghai; Zhongguo renmin jiefangjun Shanghai jingbei qu,, 1971. The only traceable complete copy Sole edition, first printing, rare complete set, of this portfolio celebrating the political, economic, and cultural role of the People's Liberation Army in the Cultural Revolution, issued to Shanghai cadres responsible for creating pop-up propaganda exhibitions. Institutionally, we have traced only the incomplete copy in the Tate's Martin Parr Collection. The 'May Seventh Directive' is the name given to a letter sent by Mao to Marshal Lin Biao in 1966 calling for the army to become an ideological bastion of the unfolding Cultural Revolution. By 1971, the directive had become a hallowed statement of the movement's guiding principles, as well as the inspiration for the May Seventh Cadre Schools, where party members who had politically erred could find redemption through a daily diet of manual labour and the study of Mao's writings. Sets of this portfolio were used in community spaces, schools, and… Read More

Description:
Paris: sons of Michel Etienne David,, 1744. A handsomely illustrated 18th-century Parisian edition of Sallust's complete works, in a well-preserved French period binding. The tooling on the spine, featuring a simple gilt flower surrounded by leaves and stars in the compartments, was popular and resembles the style of the celebrated royal bookbinder Louis Doceur, active in Paris at the time. The work is part of a series of finely printed Latin classics produced by a consortium of French printers - including the workshop of David and Coustellier - who sought to imitate the style of the Dutch family of printers Elzevir (active 1587-1681), as Elzevir's small-format editions were becoming uncommon. This volume contains three plates designed by the prominent French engraver and art critic Charles-Nicolas Cochin II (1715-1790). Employed by Louis XV in 1737 to create commemorative prints for major events at court, Cochin was later made curator of the royal drawings collection, and worked as King's… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1913]. Signed limited edition, number 505 of 1,000 copies signed by the illustrator. J. M. Barrie's comedy was first performed in 1901 and enjoyed frequent revivals. The play provided the name for the confectionery first manufactured in 1936. The play was first filmed in 1927 and a second adaptation, starring Katharine Hepburn, was released in 1937. Reviewing the volume in December 1913, the Times Literary Supplement noted that "with Hugh Thomson's irresistible illustrations in colour it is a book not merely to like, but to love". The bookplate is that of Christopher Hatton Turner (1873-1940), the architect, author and social reformer. Quarto. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, elaborate blocking to front cover in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Description:
London: Hutchinson,, 1982. Presentation copy to his fellow philosopher First edition, first impression, presentation copy from the author to his friend, the philosopher Anthony Meredith Quinton (1925-2010), inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Tony from Karl November 1982". Quinton taught philosophy at Oxford from 1955 onwards, joining A. J. Ayer's seminal discussion group there. He was firmly in the Anglo-American analytic school, a staunch empiricist, and no fan of the continental philosophers. His three key works were published in the 1970s: The Nature of Things (1973), a bold defence of materialism ranging from metaphysics to the theory of value; Utilitarian Ethics (1973), defending the utilitarian notion that morality consists in promoting the greatest happiness of the greatest number; and The Politics of Imperfection (1978), on the secular and religious traditions of English conservative thought. Elected president of Trinity College, Oxford in 1978, Quinton became more involved in public… Read More

London: Andre Deutsch,, 1969. Second edition, first impression, of Rhys's debut novel, originally published as Postures in 1928. This copy has the typed address label of Olwyn Hughes, Rhys's literary agent, pasted to the front free endpaper, and may be a retained copy for distribution by Hughes to advertise her services. After the Second World War, Rhys lapsed into obscurity and her books fell out of print. This title was reissued following the success of her masterpiece, Wide Sargasso Sea, published in 1966. Hughes (1928-2016) and Rhys lived close to each other in north London, where they first struck up their professional relationship. Hughes gained a reputation as a fierce negotiator on behalf of her clients, and she managed the literary estate of Sylvia Plath and the work of her brother, Ted Hughes. Octavo. London: Printed for the Villon Society, by private subscription and for private circulation only,, 1898. First Payne edition, deluxe issue, number 560 of an unknown limitation. The translator of this edition, John Payne (1842-1916), was a poet and friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Payne took an interest in limited edition publishing, and co-founded the Villon Society with a small circle of friends in order to publish his translations of the works of French medieval poet François Villon; the Society later published the work for which he is best known, his translation of the Arabian Nights, between 1882 and 1884. When his edition of Omar Khayyám's verse was published, in 1898, a "cult of the Rubáiyát" was beginning to grow in "the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America" (Yohannan, p. 202). Octavo. Description:
[London: John Wolfe,], 1588. An Elizabethan printing of Aretino, perhaps read by Shakespeare First edition thus, a surreptitious London printing aimed at the Italian market, an attractive copy in contemporary vellum. A sustained argument has been made that Shakespeare read Aretino in this edition. The prominent Elizabethan printer John Wolfe (1548-1601) was "a notable publisher of Italian works, including those by Pietro Aretino and, inevitably perhaps, Machiavelli, probably employing the Italian refugee Petruccio Ubaldini as an editor and reader" (ODNB). He was close to the leading literary men of the day, and printed the first edition of Spenser's Faerie Queene. Four of Aretino's comedies are included: the Marescalco, Talanta, Cortigiana and Hipocrito; Wolfe apologises to the reader for not including the projected fifth, the Filosofo, as the text was unprocurable. Wolfe's edition seems to have been intended primarily for export to Italy, where surreptitious editions were in demand, as all of… Read More

Description:
Lisbon: Francisco Xavier de Souza,, 1848. Early Portuguese publication on communism Rare first edition in Portuguese, translated from the similarly scarce French first edition published in the same year. WorldCat locates three copies only of the Portuguese translation, at Harvard, Yale, and the University of Michigan. The Belgian author Guarin de Vitry discusses several common objections to communism: that it results in a centralised, and too powerful, government; that it restricts individual freedom; that the abolition of competition results in lack of productivity; and that the distribution of goods would be a problem. This pamphlet was translated by João Maria Nogueira (1816-1856), a journalist with socialist leanings who wrote political pamphlets and books, and works on statistics. Although regarded as a translation by Rodrigues, Innocencio lists it under Nogueira's own works. Sextodecimo (161 x 111 mm), 16 pp. Printed pamphlet, wire-stitched, unopened.
