In 1835 the world's richest deposit of white crystalline marble was discovered in the area of Georgia then known as "Long Swamp Valley." As quarries moved into the area it soon became known as Marble Hill. Around 1880 the greater world became aware of these rich deposits and soon sought to take them over. Early in the 20th century, Frank H. Sidall and H.C. Clement, both Northerners looking to make some money in the "New South," created the Georgia Marble Company. By 1916, the Georgia Marble Company had purchased the… Read More

Description:
[Berkeley]: [Edition One], [2013]. First edition [likely a very small print run]. Squarish octavo (9 x 8 3/4 inches]. Unpaginated but with 19 captioned photographic illustrations (all printed on rectos). With an original platinum print measuring 3 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches mounted into corners on the rear leaf. Publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with black endpapers. As new. Inscribed by the photographer on the title page "Esalen 2014, Learning to be Quiet, Blessings. Dave Schoenwald." at the title page. We can understand the title and impetus for this publication by reading Schoenwald's text near the end - "Back in the summer of 2011, I took two and a half months off from work and camped across the United States---starting in Mojave National Preserve and making my way to the Appalachians... before returning to California... I often think of the solitude of the Mojave, the awe I experienced at the Grand Canyon... I didn't know it at the time, but this trip was a way to reconnect with myself, and the… Read More

New York: Gremor Press, (1944). First edition. One of 300 copies. [vi], 58, [6, index and colophon] pp. with cover illustrations and six in-text illustrations by Ian Hugo. Publisher's white boards, front lettered and with design. Previous owner's discreet presentation. Some sunning at board edges and overall aging but a very good copy. Introduction by Anais Nin, who was had 'relations' with both the author and the illustrator of this volume. Her "Dear John" to C. L. Baldwin is quite famous: "Anais Nin had particularly harsh words for poet C.L. Baldwin, a onetime lover, who strayed outside his marriage to consort with her, only to return to his family. "The day I discovered your deadness -- long ago -- my illusion about you died and I knew you could never enter my world, which you wanted so much. Because my world is based on passion, and you know that my world, which you now deride, made Henry (Miller) a great writer. But in the middle of this fiery and marvelous give and take, going out with you was… Read More

Description:
New York: Humboldt Publishing Company, 1890. First American edition. 55, [3, ads] pp. Publisher's printed buff wrappers. Lower front corner chipped. Overall, a very good copy. "In 1871 Schäffle resigned his professorship to join the cabinet of Count Karl Sigmund von Hohenwart as minister of commerce for Austria. The government fell in that same year, however, and Schäffle took up residence in Stuttgart, where he devoted himself entirely to literary work. Schäffle's magnum opus, a treatise called Bau und Leben des sozialen Körpers (Construction and Life of the Social Body) was published in four volumes from 1875 to 1878. The work was a grandiose attempt to create a unified system combining the natural and social sciences. Schäffle attempted to show a unity between human social behavior and the biological processes observed by natural science, while retaining a spiritual aspect in the tradition of German idealist philosophy. In his Quintessence of Socialism (1875) and The Impossibility of Social… Read More
