Bound in stiff, brown paper wraps. This issue's signature article is T. C. Elliott's "The Log of the H. M. S. Chatham," in which he reprints, and provides explication of, the effort of Lieut. Broughton to enter the mouth of the Columbia River. Captain Robert Gray had been the first non-Native American to discover the mighty Columbia and revealed his findings to Captain George Vancouver days later. Vancouver then attempted to enter the river with the smaller vessel in his expedition, the HMS Chatham. Other articles include a memoir of Hall Jackson Kelley, and selected writings of Harvey W. Scott, who served 40 years as editor of the Morning Oregonian.
