Charles Shinn's father, James, was one of California's most important early nurserymen. Charles became editor in 1878 of California Horticulturist. Pacific Rural Handbook was his first book, a good source for the early state horticulture and ornamental gardening on the West Coast, stressing the improvement of gardens, orchards, house-plants, lawns, and woodlands. A very good copy of a scarce book. Illustrated.

The inner front hinge of Volume I has been strengthened, and the dust jacket on Volume II is heavily t and crumpled.

A rare work with only two copies recorded - one at Oxford on COPAC and Woldca records the RIBA copy. This is a rare set of plates of hundreds of ornaments and architectural details suitable for furniture design and room interiors. Included are designs for chairs, beds, tables, and cabinets and mirror frames The architectural details include brackets, pilasters, carved frets, panels, foliage. The book was apparently published in parts, and the surviving copie vary in number of plates from 39 to 46. Our copy has 49. Some foxing. A go to very good copy.

Noted by Arnt as being a useful book despite its age. Very good. Nice plates.
