Good. - An 8 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide page from a program for the December 15, 1921 performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bruno Walter. The page is signed by the 5 singers: Lotte Leonard, Mme. Charles Cahier, Karl Erb, Hans Duhan, and Franz Markhoff. Folded horizontally with tiny tears or chips to the left and right edges and creases to the corners. This fragile program leaf printed on highly acidic paper is darkened, but has since been professionally de-acidified. <p>The German Soprano Lotte Leonard (1884-1976) [aka Charlotte Levy] emigrated to America during World War Two. Very good. - sc An original 4-3/4 inch high by 7 inch wide albumen print by Carlo Ponti depicting the Palazzo Vendramin, the residence the Duchesse de Berry purchased from the descendants of the Vendramin Calergi family in 1844. The image shows the palatial front of the Palazzo, its balcony overlooking the canal and front door opening up near a gondola moored next to the columns at the foot of a few steps. A sculpture adorns the garden wall at right, and the facade of another home can be viewed along the right of the image. Mounted by the photographer onto 8-3/4 inch high by 11-3/4 inch wide light green mat board with printed white double rules framing the image. The photographer's blind stamp "Carlo Ponti / Venezia" is embossed at the bottom of the mat and the image is identified in ink on the mat below the photograph. Bumped & lightly rubbed with a few small stains & light staining to Vol. 1 rear cover; tiny hole in cloth of Vol. 2 rear cover; score mark to Vol. 3 front cover. xvii, [i] & 924 pp.; xviii, [i] & 966 pp. plus publisher's catalogue; and xxiii & 849 pp. plus publisher's catalogue. Owner's ink inscription & signature on Vol. 1 front endpaper with stain to flyleaf, light soiling to half-title & page edges slightly darkened; Vol. 2 cracked at p. 464 with tears to paper along front hinge & the rear hinge starting; owner's ink name on Vol. 3 front pastedown with 2 rear pages roughly cut. Good. <p>Vol. 2 was published in 1925, Vols. 1 and III in 1926.<p>The best reference in the field.
