Published without mentioning the artist, it is based on the "Toposkopisches Panorama" published in 1853 by Ludwig Meyer von Schauensee (1809-1864). Early 17th cent. vellum, gold fillets, with large central colored and gold-stamped armorial supralibros on both covers (unidentified), back gilt. Strasbourg, Johann Knobloch, 1508. Urs Graf's (Solothurn 1485-1528) celebrated fine woodcut series of the the so-called Ringmann Passion of Jesus Christ was first issued in 1506 in two editions, German and Latin. The text from the NT passion was brought together by Johann Geiler von Keysersberg, the famous Swiss born priest (1445-1510). Editor of Urs Graf's present earliest book illustration was Matthias Ringmann (1482-1511), and this is its third Latin edition of one of Graf's most important works. First edition of Vredeman's "Perspective" issued by Hondius, and printed simultaneously also in French, Dutch and German. Present here is the valuable Latin version, "the classical language in which Vredeman's architecture is clad and thus becomes timeless in its character" (Millard, p. 20f.). The calligraphy, book design, and illumination was executed by the well-known English illuminator and miniature painter Alberto Sangorski (1862-1932), who specialized in illustrating religious texts. The reproductions are by the Graphic Engraving Company. The introduction by Mrs. R.L. Stevenson is printed in red. The prayers are in black with red initials, each starting with a large illuminated initial.
