One sheet 10 x 16 in. folded to four leaves 5 x 8 in. Docketing information on the last page. Has been folded. Small tear not affecting text; glue reidue, else very good.
Nineteenth century manuscript pasturage contracts for Texas cattle driven to Kansas are rare. This shows how cattle moved from Texas up to Kansas for sale. Brooks, Knox & Co. were merchants in Gonzales, Texas and who appear in a Texas Supreme Court decision in 1872. Whiting is in northeast Kansas and currently has a population of 208.

Two of the images of picking cotton are untitled. One has written on bottom of the photo: "Cabin Home rear of Cotton Field." One photo has written on bottom of photo "Peach Orchard." One image shows an African American overseer. The clothing appears similar to some images from the Library of Congress taken in the 1920s.

OCLC shows no holding but there is one holding of a different image (Denver Pub. Lib.) This photograph is illustrated in the memorial booklet In memoriam, Helen Hunt Jackson (H.H.). Jackson requested that after her death she be buried on the northern slope of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs. In 1891, because sightseers threatened her peaceful grave, her body was removed to the family plot.

Printed game board shows illustrations of chickens on the border and a coyote eating a sheep at the center. The text gives the instructions to the game.

First row: burro, borrego, caballo, imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, estrella. Pictorial game with 20 illustrations of animals and objects with printed words in Spanish or Náhuatl. The game of Lotería, often referred to as "Mexican Bingo" was among the most popular games of chance in Mexico; although it persists until the present day, the game has given a more educational and ludic purpose.
The game is similar to the American Bingo, however, they differ substantially on the way that the numbers or cards are given. In Bingo an announcer calls out the selected letters and numbers, such as "B-4" and the players mark their game boards accordingly. It is listed in Casillas, Juegos y Diversiones de Posada (2013). This is a type of Goose game, where players threw the dice to reach the bullring. "[It] is a board for a board game. It consists of an oval divided into 32 squares that narrate, step by step, what happened in a bullfight. The image that occupies the center of the board shows people arriving and entering the square. An interesting letter concerning two Generals who were in Nashville, Tennessee. The letter references General Pillow's trouble with General Scott and the activities of their Whig opponents ("Taylor men") in an extended horse metaphor (reins, traces, etc.). He also asks for help regarding his bill in Congress, mentioning his exploit that was no doubt the basis for the bill. H.R. 363, a bill for the Relief of Captain Dan Drake Henrie was passed Jan 22, 1849. An interesting glimpse of the politics after the Mexican War by a Texas Ranger and hero of the Mexican War.

The sod house was an alternative to the log cabin during frontier settlement of the Great Plains when there was a lack of timber for building. Settler families tended to live in their sod houses six or seven years. - "Living in a Sod House," Nebraskastudies.org Photograph shows a family group, with men on horseback, children and a dog outside a sod house. Pointer is named in Paddock, A Brief History of Malvern, [Iowa] 1917: "J. W. Pointer is our new picture man." This entry is for 1901. There is another entry for 1904 listing an assistant at Pointer's Gallery. Malvern is across the river from Nebraska.

An ambitious attempt to market 247 acre blocks to Americans. Map shows the Southern Pacific Railway line. The map on the verso shows larger area around the proposed development.

The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana.
