Description:
Dublin, Ireland: Reprinted by Hibernia-Press Company, 1810. Reprint. Leather-bound. Very Good. Three Volumes in Two Bindings: Quartos, 10.8 in. x 6 in. Illustrated with frontispieces of Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Totness, and eighteen additional plates, seventeen of which are foldouts. Full calf with floral frame stamped and triple-ruled in blind to front and back boards. Rebacked with gilt title on black panels, five raised-bands, six compartments ruled in gilt, with gilt fleurons. Marbled edges. Rubbing to extremities. Replaced endpapers. Ink-written mis-attribution of author's name (Thomas O'Grady, Berehaven) to both title pages. The inscriber's confusion must have originated from the fact that Standish O'Grady wrote a two volume history of Ireland (1887 & 1880), and edited the 1896 edition of Pacata Hibernia. Reverend O'Grady was actually the Church of Ireland rector of Castletown Berehaven and with his wife, Susanna Dowe, the parents of noted author Standish O'Grady. Pages are bright;… Read More

Boston, Mass: Greenough and Stebbins, 1807. First Edition. Removed. Good. Octavo, 8 1/2" x 5 1/2." pp. 43. Removed from a book of pamphlets. Original stab-holes present. Title-page browned with light damp-stains in upper and lower left-hand corners, seeped through first 5 leaves. Leaves 2-3 fully detached. Pages lightly tanned throughout with sharp print on clean paper. (Sabin 42455). This pamphlet by a "Yankee farmer" was penned by John Lowell, a notable member of the Federalist Party. The Chesapeake Affair of 1807 was a naval skirmish between the British warship HMS Leopard and the American frigate USS Chesapeake. The British ship launched an attack against and boarded the Chesapeake, allegedly in search of British deserters. The affair fanned the flames of British-American tensions and eventually led to President Thomas Jefferson's Embargo of 1807. Both the Chesapeake Affair and the Embargo are viewed as precipitating events to the War of 1812. (Wikipedia).
