Description:
One of the world's greatest narrative poems, the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach (fl.c.1195-1225) is a re-creation - and completion - of the story of the Holy Grail which was left unfinished by its initiator, Chretien de Troyes.Set against an alternating backdrop of forbidding landscape and dazzling courtly ritual, Parzival's noble quest for the supreme goal of chivalry is effectively contrasted with the less spiritual pre-occupations and careers of his father and of Gawan, his amorous comrade-in-arms.

Description:

Description:
Ioannes Philoponus - Industrious Jack - was a Christian Neoplatonist who worked in Greek Alexandria in the sixth century AD. He was a tireless author. His vast oeuvre, considerable portions of which survive, included commentaries on Aristotle, philosophical treatises, and works of Christian theology and Christian polemic. As a theologian, he was embroiled in the doctrinal disputes of the time, championing the monophysite cause and espousing tritheism. As a philosopher, he was most remarkable - as the title of Richard Sorabji's splendid book indicates - for his rejection of various parts of the dominant Aristotelian view of the the physical universe. Description:
Chartres as an intellectual and cultural force in the Renaissance of the twelfth century has engaged the attention of the critics and scholars from R.L. Poole through Gilson, Curtius, and Huizinga to, most recently, Peter Dronke. Its importance as a poetic tradition is now reviewed by Winthrop Wetherbee, first as it developed at Chartres, then as it influenced later poetry, French as well as Latin.

Description:
"Catullus is fiendishly hard to translate. To bring him alive needs stringent discipline and love of the work: here they are ... "Ave" I say to Catullus and his brilliant translator. There will be no "vale" to this book for a very long time." Patric Dickinson (The Sunday Times, London)"... a performance of immense lucidity and pace, following the sense of the original with unerring accuracy and discernment. He catches the dirty rancour of the shorter pieces as finely as the formal splendours of the longer narratives." Alan Brownjohn, New Statesman" … it is the first time that we have been able to read the bawdiest of Catullus's erotic verses cast into honest English rather than evaded in some other tongue." Sarah Preston, Sunday Telegraph (London)

Description:
This new English edition of the poems of a twelfth-century troubadour provides an excellent example of the Golden Age of Provencal poetry. Peire Rogier was a contemporary of Bernart de Ventadour, Giraut de Bornelh and Raimbaut d'Orange. Of his works there remain eight love poems (cansos), including one of doubtful authenticity and a poem addressed to Raimbaut d'Orange (sirventes). The conventional themes of courtly love, as typified by the troubadour lyrical poetry of this period, humility, discretion, patience and moderation, form the subject matter of the poems, which are for the most part free from the artificiality and obscurity found in the work of some later troubadours: it is perhaps in the clarity, simplicity and naturalness of his style that Rogier's chief merit as a poet lies. This is the first complete edition since Carl Appel's of 1882 and contains much information that was not available then. The introduction includes a section on Rogier's life as well as studies of his versification… Read more

Description:
Pythagoras, the first man to call himself a philosopher, was both a brilliant mathematician and spiritual teacher. This anthology, the largest collection of Pythagorean writings ever to appear in the English language, contains the four ancient biographies of Pythagoras and over 25 Pythagorean and Neo-pythagorean ethical and political tractates are especially interesting, for they are based on the premise that the universal principles of Harmony, Proportion and Justice govern the physical cosmos, and these writings show how individuals and societies alike attain their peak of excellence when informed by these same principles. Indexed, illustrated, with appendixes and an extensive bibliography, this work also contains a foreword by Joscelyn Godwin and an introductory essay by David R. Fideler.

Description:
Theophrastus Paracelsus, doctor, chemist, and mystic was born in Switzerland in 1493.He is celebrated as the man who, on his appointment as town physician and lecturer in the University of Basle in 1526, preceeded his lectures by a solemn burning of the books of his predecessors Galen and Avicenna. The prophecies comprise 32 allegorical pictures each accompanied by a prognostication, a preface and an elucidation. Paracelsus' images are usually obscure. It was as if he saw the future as a series of moving pictures on a film but was only able to describe them out of chronological sequence. Like other occult works of the period, the course of future events is never explicitly stated. It is up to the reader to use his insight and imagination to draw his own conclusions from the subtle hints that Paracelsus gives.
