American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-Street, New York, 1847; 12mo, 248 pages; no p.d. (circa 1847); embossed black cloth; gilt titles. Autobiography of early 19th century author, poet, journalist, and political activist Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, née Browne (1790-1846) who, though never an ordained minister, was a zealous evangelist for Protestantism in both England and Ireland. Struck deaf at age nine, she became a pioneer in deaf education, and her 1844 book The Wrongs Of Woman was credited as being instrumental in the passage of worker safety regulations in Britain. Tonna’s works were widely popular during her lifetime, but often criticized as too political, something the author freely admitted, and for which she made no apology. The American Tract Society edition, published for American readers and abridged for extraneous British political content. VG-, 3/8" closed cloth tear upper portion of the spine panel, small chips at top spine extremity, some cloth wear along the shoulders,…

Description:
, 1930; circa 1930 original silver gelatin 8" x 10" studio portrait photograph of Doreen Palmer, wife and stage partner of Jay Palmer in the magic team "Jay Palmer And Doreen." Jay Palmer began his show business career in 1921 as an assistant to vaudeville magician The Great Leon (Leon Harry Levy, 1876-1951), and in later years to Harry Houdini. After marrying Doreen, the couple put together their own act in which Jay performed most of the magic and Doreen provided comedic counterpoint by condescendingly criticizing her husband’s technique. They were much known for their original illusion "The Magic Kettle," in which a small pitcher poured out a seemingly inexhaustible supply of water. Doreen and her husband enjoyed a long popularity, continuing their act on both stage and television into the 1960’s. From the Great Leon estate. Fine condition.
