Sandbornton, N.H.: Charles Lane, 1838. Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) of the Royal Navy is noted as an early practicioner of sea-stories. Although he has been reprinted, his period works are uncommon today.This is a lovely set of his sixth novel, in a full-leather binding. Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine condition. Smooth calf with gilt lettering on the spine. Originally published in London in 1835 (although LoC claims an edition by Carey & Hart dated 1834), these were Issued as part of "Lane's Uniform Edition." Clean, bright text; 227 pages and 209 pages. Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1929. Yeats and Pound, although separated by differences in their age, temperament, and career status, had lived together in England. A story in the NY Times (1988) reported "The situation at Stone Cottage is unmatched in literary history: two of the greatest poets of the 20th century - and two poets so different in temperament - living in excruciatingly close quarters for months at a time." Pound would describe the scene in his Cantos: "I recalled the noise in the chimney as it were the wind in the chimney but was in reality Uncle William downstairs composing . . . at Stone Cottage in Sussex by the waste moor." London: Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1887. Baron de Mandat-Grancy (1842-1911) worked as a journalist and travel writer. "Chez Paddy" is sympathetic to the situation of the Irish, but he did not think rebellion would happen. His economic theories saw emmigration or protection as the only options. The review in "The Economist" (8/6/1887) calls him an "intelligent observer" and a "charming writer." Quercus notes, however, that his conservative views were more than tinged with racism in the book he wrote on America, and he enjoys some popularity among current white nationalists. Chicago: Ben Abramson, 1955. This is a "lost" playlet by the famed actor/manager William Gillette (1853-1937), who played Sherlock holmes some 1300 times during his career. Originally performed as an olio act in a 1905 production of "Clarice," with Charlie Chaplin in its cast. Yellow decorative cloth binding with a red spine; paper title label on the front cover. Fine condition, with a clean text; 25 pages. Illustrated with a photo of Gillette as Holmes and a playbill from the prodcuction; a sweet little book that was LIMITED to 500 copies. This is a Very Good set of a Later Printing. "Six Parts Complete in Three Volumes" with marbled paper-covered boards, red eather spine and tips. All page edges are also marbled. Clean texts; very bright and clear, but with some occasional spotting. 150 pages, 159 pages, and 169 pages. An attractive little set, and quite readable today.. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. London: Chatto & Windus, 1898. The last volume in Zola's "Three Cities" series (naturally, a trilogy). This is a Very Good copy of the First English Edition. Translated from the French by Alfred Vizetelly. Blue cloth binding decorated with multiple 3-masted ships on the front cover and spine. Titling on the front is black; gilt on the spine. Clean text; xiv, 488 page; floral decorative endpapers. Preface by the translator, Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. There is an advertising leaf in the front and the rear contains a 32-page catalog.
