[Covelo, California]: The Yolla Bolly Press, 2000. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Schumaker, Ward. Number 168 of 200 copies, quarto size, 112 pp., signed by George Plimpton and Ward Schumaker. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), one of the most important figures in the Modernist movements in both literature and art, has given us a charming glimpse into life in France during the first third of the 20th century regaling us with the life of the average, everyday French. This work differs from her others in that it is a narration, told in a rambling style, touching upon "the behaviour of French cats, the thin arms of Frenchwomen, the paleness of French potatoes...to poignant war stories about children and horses" (n. b., quote from web site of the Yolla Bolly Press). Interestingly, The New Yorker review saw the memoir differently, as being "about who Americans are and what Americans think when they are not in Paris at all." As with all great writing, it is actually a bit of both, accompanied by twelve… Read more

The beloved character first appeared in Barrie's novel "The Little White Bird", and Barrie went on to write the classic story of Neverland as the play "Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up"; the script was then adapted as a novel, "Peter and Wendy". This novel is the story in its best-known form, featuring the adventures of the Darling children in Neverland, and their encounters with Captain Hook and his crew of pirates. A short prose poem about a man losing his hat in a sudden flurry, which can be read on so many levels; the simple tale of a man losing his hat during a windstorm; or "how badly the Hat needs a head to fill up its emptiness and restore its purpose in life"; or two halves each yearning for the other; or, a hat that "find[s] itself a crown". With a delightful illustration of a man jumping to catch - or flying? - his hat which seems destined to remain forever out of reach. Quite uncommon, and not listed in the Grabhorn-Hoyem Bibliography.___DESCRIPTION: Illustrated and letterpress printed on fine laid cream paper, both the printing and illustration in black, with the signature of Andrew Hoyem beneath his printed name, and the hand-written date of "June 1973"; bottom edge deckled, measuring almost 15" by 7".___CONDITION:… Read more

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2009. Limited Edition. No binding. Fine. Lemaire, Angela. No. 3 of 25 copies for sale, folio size, 52 pp. The story begins: "I was present during the Great Plague of 1665, It took away my life," he said. Per the artist, this work, originally produced by her in 1967, is "about a man who is killed by the plague in London in 1665; I have brought him to life again, so that he can tell his story." The story unfolds as a series of nine eerily wonderful etchings by Angela Lemaire, which were inspired by the sufferings of the plague victims. Each enclosed in a separate leaf and introduced with a quotation from scripture also dealing with suffering, with each plate numbered and signed by her. Ms. Lemaire's Afterword tells the story of her inspiration for the work, and the essay by Anthony Dyson discusses the making and proofing of the plates which is a story worthy on its own merits. ___DESCRIPTION: Unbound folio sheets, each with letterpress printing on the first… Read more
