Pancrace Bessa (1772-1832) was at one time student of Van Spaendonck, the esteemed flower painter of Le Jardin du Roi, and who along with colleague Pierre Joseph Redoute (court painter to Empress Josephine and Napoleon) mastered the fine art of stipple engraving produced some of the finest botanical work of early nineteenth century France. Bessa's technical and artistic achievement evident, his finely hand-colored engravings remain coveted examples of botanical illustration.
