The American oikotype of the the legend took root and grew in a country composed of two radical facts: horses and horsemen. The frontier West was a place where mobility was often the key to survival. Having a horse that would run fast and long occasionally made the difference between keeping one's hair and losing it. Consequently everyone who could beg, buy, borrow or steal a horse went mounted. The truth behind the proverb that "a man without a horse is no man at all" was seldom ignored by anyone with a yen for living a long and profitable life. Description:
294-314 pages with diagrams, photographs and cited references. Quarto (10" x 7") bound in original publisher's wrappers. American Antiquity Volume 40, number 3 complete issue. First edition. Two hitherto unrelated Teotihuacan mural paintings, no longer in situ, probably are companion pieces from upper and lower walls in the same portico or room or in related porticos or rooms of the same compound. The tassel headdresses worn by the figures in the paintings appear to be insignia of "Rain God"-related social units or institutions, signifying leadership and authority, with military associations. The contexts in which the tassel headdresses occur, both within the ancient city and outside its borders, suggest that persons with rights to the headdress may have been members of or attached to the ruling establishment or the bureaucracy of the Teotihuacan state. The unique two-part notation on the upper wall painting appears to be hierarchically ordered, corresponding to a ranking either of the social units to… Read More

Description:
173-192 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (10" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume XLV Number 3 complete issue. First edition.
During the mid-twentieth century in Oklahoma, young artists at a school for American Indians selectively used ethnographic accounts of Native American cultures written by anthropologists to enhance their artistic representations. While creating Indian art became an important means of preserving knowledge of tribal cultures, cultural preservation took on a larger significance in the school's goal to train professional Indian artists whose livelihoods depended on the patronage of private collectors and museums. Art students utilized anthropological accounts of Indian cultures to help them succeed, but they and their teachers ultimately rejected anthropologists as final authorities on their cultures. Through their participation in art competitions that demanded specific representations of Indianness, their use of ethnography, and their rejection… Read More

A desire to recreate Minoan palaces, villas, and houses of the Late Bronze Age inspired the author of this book to undertake an eight year research program that has radically modified our conception of the appearance of Cretan dwellings. James Collier Gifford (1927-1973) was an anthropologist with a particular interest in the archaeology of the American Southwest and ancient Mesoamerica. He was born in New York City and attended private boarding high schools; the Thatcher School in Ojai, California and the Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs.
