Description:
Fort Lauderdale, FL: S.i., 1984. First Edition. Self-published draft of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist's play, set in Hemingway's home in Cuba during the 1950's. In addition to working for South Florida's Sun Sentinel, de Groot was also a member of the award-winning team that covered the Kent State shootings in 1970. de Groot's depiction of Hemingway relied more on "the man and his exploits" than his literary legacy, and the play was a result of his life-long fascination with the author. The play premiered at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach in 1987, starring veteran Miami-based actor William Hindman as Hemingway. Ten years later the play ran for 73 performances at the Douglas Fairbanks Theater in New York, directed by John Henry Davis and starring Len Cariou as Hemingway. Rare; we find no copies for sale in the trade, and while OCLC notes 2 later editions of the play (1988, by Lime Tree Productions, and 1989, by the Hemingway Western Studies Center, Boise State University), this… Read More

Description:
London: Collins, 1956. Original dustjacket artwork for the First British Edition of Calvino's first novel. The novel, told from a child's perspective, paints the trauma of war torn Italy using a variety of impressive characters, namely a young boy and his teenage sister, who are depicted on the jacket. The only artwork we have seen associated with one of Calvino's books, and quite dazzling in comparison to its American counterpart. Gouache on artboard, with the image measuring 9.5 X 12 inches and the board measuring 10.5 X 15 inches; signed by artist Trevor Denning near lower right corner. Brief pencilled notation regarding measurments on the lower margin, with the publisher, author, and translator's names overlaid and mounted to the piece on thick cardstock. The printers' instruction sheet for Collins is handwritten on pink stock, affixed on verso.

Description:
New York: Grove Press Inc, 1959. First American Edition. The Mexican author's second book and first novel, following a young man's quest to find his father as he navigates an arid ghost town populated by spectral figures. Rulfo (1917-1986), one of the progenitors of magical realism, was a major influence on the Latin American boom which would come more than a decade after this, and his first book, El Llano En Llamas, were published. The novel was not immediately successful in his native Mexico, taking 4 years to exhaust a tiny first printing of 2,000 copies. Grove published the book in four issues: an Evergreen paperback, a trade edition, the deluxe issue, and one of 4 specially bound hors commerce copies. The novel would prove a critical influence on the writing of Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso, Salman Rushdie, and most notably, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who after reading it was inspired to write One Hundred Years of Solitude, and who was said to be able to recite the whole book by heart. Scarce. First… Read More
