Ownership inscription (and scribble) of Walter Radcliffe 1750 on title page. Some wear to leather but intact, sturdy, and clean. Wilkins was one of the founders of the Royal Society, as well as of natural theology, which tried to balance theology with scientific method and discoveries. Two hundred years later, Wilkins was the subject of an essay by Jorge Luis Borges, who discussed Wilkins' idea of a universal language. Borges' essay, in turn, was inspiration for Michel Foucault's "The Order of Things.

The debut novel, somewhat erotic, by the French author who would be celebrated by Surrealists when this book came out, only to be later rejected by them.

Chapter four is titled "Dinners Calling for Three, Four, or More Hours of Cooking," and proceeds to recipes without comment. This is followed by "One to Two Hour Dinners," and followed by "Quick-Meal Dinners," all of which chapter headings show how much more time the (usually) housewife spent preparing meals than in many modern household. The following chapter is devoted to plank cooking, an early & extensive treament of this subject.
